ROME — Canton’s Lawrence Halbfoerster wasn’t able to chase down NP-Mansfield’s James Knefley in the final 100 meters at the NTL Coaches’ Invitational Saturday.
Halbfoerster, Knefley, and Wellsboro’s Henry Whitney ran together most of the race, with Whitney and Halbfoerster both taking a tumble with over a half-mile to go.
Halbfoerster (16:33.6) fell back to third before catching Whintey (16:36.6) in the final 200 meters, but couldn’t quite get to Knefley (16:31.9).
“It was tough, for sure, but it was fun,” Halbfoerster said. “I really had to push myself more than in the season because I was alone, so it was just a different feeling.”
As he goes into district Halbfoerster hopes a race like this will help him.
“I just want to keep on lowering my time and closing the gap,” he said. “Even the (Northwest runner) is significantly faster than me I’m just trying to keep him in eye sight.”
Canton (131) was sixth overall as Landon Lake (18:28.8) took 16th.
Manuel Halbfoerster (18:41.9) was 22nd, Nick Weaver (19:45) took 40th, and Chase Petrowski (22:01.6) came in 57th.
For the girls Kathryn Wile (28:27.3) was 36th overall.
