NTL FOOTBALL: TROY WELCOMES WELLSBORO IN DISTRICT OPENER (2025-10-30)
BY CHRIS MANNINGNorthern Tier Sports ReportTroy (9-1) will host Wellsboro (6-4) at Mansfield University on Friday with a 7 p.m. start.
The Trojans rolled past the Hornets 53-7 in their first meeting a couple weeks ago but aren’t taking anything for granted as Wellsboro is 3-0 since that game.
“Wellsboro is a confident team right now,” said Troy coach Jim Smith. “They have improved since we saw them a few weeks ago. Playing a quality team twice has many challenges. We cannot overlook a good team with experienced coaches. It’s one week at a time, and for now our focus is solely on Wellsboro.”
After 10 weeks of regular season play the Trojans couldn’t be more excited to be in the postseason.
“This is where you really find out who you are, and what you’re made of,” remarked Smith. “It requires complete team buy in, focus, and mental toughness to compete in the playoffs. The weather changes, the time changes, winter sports are kicking into gear, the players are beat up and tired going into it. It takes tough people to endure the grind from here on out. You are tested in every way, and we are excited for it.”
KEYS TO THE GAMEWellsboro - Put some points up early. If Wellsboro can score early, and hang on through the first half, anything is possible in the second half.
Troy - Hit the ground running. The Trojans have done a good job of taking care of business so they can rest their starters and no reason to let up now.
PLAYERS TO WATCHGriffin Morral, Wellsboro, QB - Morral has come into his own at quarterback over these past few weeks. How he goes so goes the Hornets.
Spencer Martin, Troy, WR/DB - Martin had a big week against Canton while on defense he’ll be tested by Wellsboro’s pass game.
