BY CHRIS MANNINGNorthern Tier Sports ReportHERSHEY — Towanda’s Maris Cobb finished off a phenomenal freshman season with a state medal, taking 17th at the PIAA, Class AA Girls’ Cross-country Championships Saturday.
“I feel really honored that I’m able to perform this well and compete at a young age,” remarked Cobb.
She was one of four freshman to finish in the top 25, running 19:59 on the course.
“My mindset was 25-and-under,” explained Cobb. “I really wanted to medal this year, and I’m just happy that I did.”
She was 18th at the mile, and got as high as 14th halfway through the race.
Cobb fell back to 16th by the 2-mile, but held her spot nearly until the end.
“It really felt like I was going to die out there,” Cobb said about those famous Hershey hills. “I felt the lactic acid in my legs, but I just kept pushing.”
The final 200 meters was into a strong headwind.
“It felt like a long ways away, but I was happy to make it this far,” she said.
With eight runners ahead of her graduating Cobb maybe looking at a higher medal come 2026.
“It gives me a good gameplay going into how to run the course,” she said. “It gives me a good idea of what I need to do.”
Teammate Izzy Larson (21:45) was 95th overall. She was sitting in 83rd at the mile, then fell back to 96th halfway through the race.
She did make it back to 91st with 1,000 meters to go.
