NTL GIRLS' BASKETBALL: TOWANDA EDGES WILLIAMSPORT (January 3, 2026)

Northern Tier Sports Report
TOWANDA — Towanda battled off a tough Williamsport squad, 50-44, during non-league girls’ basketball action Saturday.

“It was a good opportunity today against a very athletic and physical Williamsport team,” said Towanda coach Rob Gentile. “We did not compete at an acceptable level for us today. It is nice to know that we can still win games without our best effort, but that is going to change soon! They forced us into a ton of mistakes, but the kids found a way to make enough plays when it mattered most.”

Williamsport led 16-12 after the opening quarter but a 12-5 run from Towanda in the second put them up 24-21 at the half.

The teams had 14 points each in the third quarter before the Knights out scored them 12-9 in the fourth to get the win.

“It was another opportunity to learn, so I hope we gained some valuable experience in this one,” said Gentile. “I felt like Williamsport outcompeted us today and that part of the game has to be won by us if we want to be successful. Win, lose, or draw we have to be the hardest working team on the floor, and I didn't feel like we were today. Hats off to Williamsport for competing hard for four quarters.”

Brynn Woodruff had 14 points, four boards, four blocks, and two steals to lead Towanda as Payton Perry netted 12 points to go with four steals.

Mya Maynard had six points, eight boards, and two steals, with Mary-Kate Eberlin adding six points, four assists, and two steals.

Taylor Aquilio scored five points, with Maris Cobb, Kennedy Heyer, and Ali Hollett adding two points apiece. Karis Flynn added one point with two steals.

Woodruff had eight of Towanda’s 12 first quarter points but the Millionaires had eight field goals in the frame to take the lead.

Perry lit up the nets in the second with seven points to help the Knights take a three point lead into the locker rooms.

Perry added five more points in the third, as Eberlin notched four, then in the final frame Towanda did enough from the foul line - 6-for-14 - to pull out the win.

Towanda won the JV game 60-19 behind 20 from Cobb, and 12 out of Hollett.

Towanda (8-1) will put their eight game win streak on the line when they host Troy on Wednesday.

“We are going to have to improve on that quickly because we have likely the most physical team in our league coming to our gym on Wednesday in a big game,” Gentile said. “If we don't fix that part of the game, we might get embarrassed on our own floor.”
