NTL GIRLS' BASKETBALL: TROY ROUTS WAVERLY ON THE ROAD (January 3, 2026)

Northern Tier Sports Report
WAVERLY, N.Y. — Troy was down two after the first quarter, but then out scored Waverly 52-19 the rest of the way to rout the Wolverines, 65-34, during non-league girls’ hoops action Saturday.

“We got a big win because the girls played hard,” said Troy coach Steve Renzi. “They played hard, they played together, communicated. They went to the basket, doing everything that we talked about - being more physical underneath, and boxing out. I think the three games we played up at Elmira at the Christmas Tournament against high, high quality private schools has led to them realizing what they played against up there, and how hard they’ve got to play to be a great team.”

A 17-5 second quarter run allowed them to take control of the game, then held Waverly to just 14 second half points to pull away.

Kyah Renzo had 24 points to lead the Trojans, as Haidyn Watson netted 11, and Realynne Woodward scored 10.

Emma Mickley netted eight, Giana Renzi scored seven, and Izzy Renzi rounded things out with five.

“They’re sharing the ball, they’re communicating with each other,” said coach Renzi. “I love to see it.”

Ryleigh Judson led Waverly with 21.

Waverly led 15-13 after the first quarter behind Judson’s five points.

Renzo exploded in the second with eight points, while Watson netted five, to give Troy a 30-20 lead at the half.

The Trojans came out firing in the third, hitting four 3-balls, while Renzo added seven more to her tally to make it 51-31 going into the fourth.

Renzo led Troy’s 14-3 run in the fourth with seven more points.

“She’s an amazing basketball player,” coach Renzi said. “She’s a young basketball player, everybody on this team is a young basketball player. She just doesn’t know how good she can be. She works every day, she’s a very, very hard working, and it pays off in games like this. She’ll keep getting better, I just told her that at the end of the game.”

Renzi also pointed out the strong play of Watson off the bench.

“I was like, ‘can you imagine if basketball was your favorite sport, you’d be pretty good,” he said. “She’s a great sixth man. She would start on any other team, probably, but she’s just a great athlete.”

Troy (7-3) will get another tough test on Wednesday when they travel to Towanda, who is riding an 8-game win streak into the week.
