THE WEEK AHEAD: A BIG WEEK ON THE BASKETBALL COURT AS TEAMS GET GOING AGAIN (January 4, 2026)

Northern Tier Sports Report
The Winter Sports season starts up in earnest again this week as the holidays are behind, and the long month of January ahead.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Monday, January 5
Wyalusing (3-5) at Canton (7-1), 7:30 p.m.: A make-up from December, the Warriors come in riding a 5-game win streak while the Rams have gone 1-3 in their last four games.

Wellsboro (3-4) at NEB (3-2), 7:30 p.m.: A busy month for the Panthers with 13 games, including five games in nine days to start things off. After a slow start to the season the Hornets have won two in a row.

Wednesday, January 7
Troy (7-3) at Towanda (8-1), 7:30 p.m.: The two league leaders coming into 2026, the Knights are riding an 8-game win streak while the Trojans are coming off a big road win over Waverly.

NEB (3-2) at Canton (7-1), 7:30 p.m.: A key divisional contest between the two top teams in the Small School. The two split last season.

Wellsboro (3-4) at Wyalusing (3-5), 7:30 p.m.: The Rams return home for their first game on their home court since December 15. 

Friday, January 9
Athens (4-4) at Troy (7-3), 7:30 p.m.: The Trojans play their first home game since December 19 as they take on the Wildcats. Athens defeated Tioga and Owego to win their tournament title over Christmas break.

Towanda (8-1) at Wellsboro (3-4), 7:30 p.m.: The Knights hit the road as they face Wellsboro as the two teams share wins over Williamson and Sayre - though the Hornets beat Williamson the first time around.

Canton (7-1) at NP-Liberty (3-4), 7:30 p.m.:
These two teams lock horns for the third time this year, the first two times Canton came out victorious to win tournament titles.

NP-Mansfield (3-3) at Wyalusing (3-5), 7:30 p.m.: The third game in five days for both teams, as the Tigers are coming off a tough 45-38 loss to Muncy.

Sayre (0-5) at NEB (3-2), 7:30 p.m.: The Redskins are still looking for their first win of the season while NEB has won two straight.

Saturday, January 10
South Williamsport (6-2) at NEB (3-2), 7:30 p.m.: A tough non-league test for the Panthers. South just had a 4-game win streak snapped by Montoursville just before Christmas break.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Tuesday, January 6

Towanda (8-1) at Troy (5-3), 7:30 p.m.: The defending league champions host the current league leaders. The Knights come in on a 2-game win streak, while Troy is coming off a tough loss at Waverly.

Canton (0-6) at NEB (7-2), 7:30 p.m.: The Panthers will be looking to break a 2-game losing streak while Canton hasn’t played a game since December 18.

Wyalusing (3-3) at Wellsboro (4-4), 7:30 p.m.: The Rams haven’t played since December 18, a, 89-23 win over Sayre. The Hornets are coming off a 2-point loss to Jersey Shore the day after the New Year.

Thursday, January 8
Wellsboro (4-4) at Towanda (8-1), 7:30 p.m.: A big home league game for Towanda as they look to put their stamp on the division. The Hornets are 1-2 over their last three.

Troy (5-3) at Athens (5-3), 7:30 p.m.: The Wildcats won their own tournament over Christmas break, and gave Waverly a tough game in their 77-66 loss.

Wyalusing (3-3) at NP-Mansfield (3-2), 7:30 p.m.: The Rams hit the road as they take on a Tiger squad that comes into the week on a 2-game skid.

NEB (7-2) at Sayre (1-7), 7:30 p.m.: The Panthers take on a Sayre team that’s improved as of late, beating Williamson (51-44), before falling to Mountain View on the road.

NP-Liberty (3-4) at Canton (0-6), 7:30 p.m.: The Mounties are riding high after their big win over NEB to end last week.

Saturday, January 10
Troy (5-3) at Wyalusing (3-3), 1:30 p.m.: An afternoon start for this make-up. Both young teams are looking to hit their stride as they head into the heart of the hoops season.

WRESTLING
Tuesday, January 6

NEB (9-1) at Towanda (7-4), 7 p.m.: The Panthers are coming off a tournament that saw them crown three champions, while Towanda had three wrestlers place at the always tough Windsor Tournament.

Canton (4-4) at Athens (1-2), 7 p.m.: The Warriors were 3-3 this past weekend at the Line Mountain Duals while Athens has been off since before Christmas.

Troy (1-3) at Southern Columbia, 7 p.m.: The Trojans take the long trip down to Catawissa for a tough non-league match against the Tigers.

Wednesday, January 7
Athens (1-2) at Troy (1-3), 7 p.m.: The Trojans return home. Neither team competed over Christmas break, though Troy is making up for it this week with two matches and a duals tournament on Saturday.

Thursday, January 8
Williamson (1-3) at NEB (9-1), 7 p.m.: A big league match-up as both teams have had strong starts to the season.

Montoursville (6-1) at Canton (4-4), 7 p.m.: The Warriors return home for a tough non-league against D4 power Montoursville. 

Wyalusing (11-5) at Wellsboro (0-10), 7 p.m.: The Rams return to league match action after a strong Christmas break, while the Hornets are looking for their first win.

Saturday, January 10
Troy at Towanda’s Flynn Duals, 11 a.m.: Towanda will be looking for a better showing in their January duals while Troy will be looking to finish out the busy week strong.

SWIMMING & DIVING
Thursday, January 8

Towanda, Danville at Athens, 4:30 p.m.: The Knights hit the road for a tri-meet with the Wildcats.

Saturday, January 10
Towanda at Tunkhannock Invitational: The diving competition for Tunkhannock’s Invite as Towanda’s Brennick Lain looks to build off his win at Elk Lake’s Invitational.
