NTL GIRLS' BASKETBALL: PERRY LEADS TOWANDA PAST WYALUSING (January 17, 2026)
Northern Tier Sports ReportTOWANDA — Towanda bounced back Friday as they used a second quarter run to get a lead on Wyalusing, then held them at bay for a 48-41 NTL girls’ hoops win.
“This was an outstanding and much needed win against a very good team,” said Towanda coach Rob Gentile. “Coach Reynolds does a fantastic job with that group. They have a little bit of everything. An outstanding point guard, a good shooter, two very athletic and long interior players, and one of the top on ball defenders in our league in Treanna Nickeson. That girl is so tough and very difficult to get by. I think the difference tonight was simply depth and the pace that we can force the opponent to play. At times we made them uncomfortable just enough to get a win.”
The game was tied at 11 after the opening frame, but the Knights held Wyalusing to just six points in the second quarter to take a 23-17 lead at the half.
The two teams pretty much played to a draw in the second half.
“I was so proud of my kids tonight,” remarked Gentile. “The last two weeks have been pretty trying but we made a commitment to focus on just going back to the type of team that makes us unique and to focus on our standards. If the other team is better than us then so be it, but we are going to be the toughest team that we can possibly be, and tonight I think we were very tough! Credit to Wyalusing though. That team really battle us for four quarters and every time we started to get a little separation they battled back.”
Payton Perry had 19 points, with a 3-for-8 ninth from deep, to go with eight steals, and four assists to lead Towanda.
Brynn Woodruff added 11 points, and seven boards, as Mya Maynard notched seven points, 14 rebounds, and three steals.
Mary-Kate Eberlin had five points, and two steals, Reese Sullivan added four points, and Karis Flynn ended up with two points.
Maris Cobb grabbed four boards, with Kennedy Heyer getting two steals.
Liz Kilmer had 12 points to lead Wyalusing, as Jenna Morningstar finished with 10.
Alysha Botts, and Emily Johns had seven points each, with Treanna Nickeson netting five.
Woodruff and Kilmer started hot for their teams, with Woodruff hitting two 3-balls en route to eight points for Towanda, while Kilmer had seven points to lead the Rams.
In the second Towanda hit three 3-balls, led by two from Perry, as they look the six point lead at the half.
Perry went off for eight points in the third to pace the Knights, while Morningstar led the Rams with six.
In the fourth Towanda did enough from the free throw line - 7-for-10 - to pull out the win.
Towanda won the JV game 41-27, with 12 from each Eberlin and Sullivan. Bri Sterling had 12 to lead the Rams.
Towanda (10-3) will host Sullivan County on Monday, while Wyalusing (7-6) hosts Williamson on Tuesday.
“We have put ourselves in a bad spot in terms of league championship standings, but the blessing is, we can now just focus on the now and work to improve every day,” said Gentile. “I love this group! They work and play so hard, and they truly care about our team and each other. That is all any coach really wants.”
