NTL BOYS' BASKETBALL: WHITEHEAD, ROUTE LEAD CANTON PAST WILLIAMSON (January 27, 2026)

Northern Tier Sports Report
CANTON — All season long the Canton boys’ basketball team had been searching for a win. After some close calls they got it, getting 35 points from upper classmen Monte Whitehead and Ryder Route Canton topped Williamson, 49-39, during NTL action Tuesday.

“The kids played hard tonight,” Canton coach Brock Kitchen said. “We were aggressive attacking the basket and got to the foul line early. Kix Carr did a great job on the boards, Ryder Route did his job in containing Maddix, and Monte Whitehead made clutch free throws down the stretch. We have just been focusing on playing harder, and tonight you could tell they took that to heart.”

Canton jumped out to a 13-7 first quarter lead, while the two teams were even in the second for a 22-16 lead at the half.

Canton continued to inch away in the third, out scoring Williamson 13-12, then poured in 14 points in the fourth to get the win.

Whitehead finished with 20 points, going 12-for-16 from the free throw line, while Route netted 15 with three 3-pointers.

Teyton Thompson added five, Cooper Jennings scored three, with Carr, Jack Whitehead, and Drew Holton both adding two.

Monte Whitehead, Route, and Thompson each had three points in the opening frame to give them the six point lead at the outset.

Monte Whitehead netted four more in the second quarter as Jennings hit a 3-ball.

Route found his shot in the third, hitting two 3-pointers en route to eight points as Canton kept Williamson at bay.

In the fourth Monte Whitehead went 8-for-10 from the charity stripe to ice the game.

Canton (1-16) will travel to Wellsboro on Wednesday.
