Northern Tier Sports Report
It proved to be a particularly exciting season on the mat in Bradford County with a tight race for both the NTL title, and a the North Section Championship at the end of the year. There were plenty of highlights along the way from week one all the way to Hershey.
Towanda’s Gage Evans was the only wrestler from Bradford County to earn a state medal, taking seventh at 145 pounds. Evans (38-10) was also a North Section champion, and Northeast Regional runner-up, earning him the Bradford County Wrestling All-stars Wrestler of the Year honors.
In the lighweights (107-133) Wyalusing’s Cole Patrick put together a strong season. The senior went 40-6, was a North Section runner-up, bronze medalist in District IV, and just missed a state berth, earning him the Lightweight Wrestler of the Year.
In the middleweights (139-160) Canton’s Carson Rockwell finished his high school at states. He went 36-12 with a North Section title, and bronze medals at District IV and NE Regionals, earning him the Middleweight Wrestler of the Year.
In the upper weights (172-285) Athens’ Connor Davidson battled through the meat grinder that is the Class AAA Northeast Regional, taking fifth to punch his ticket to states. He was also a District IV champion at Class AAA, earning him the Upperweight Wrestler of the Year.
NEB’s Asher Kolesar proved to be a rare freshman, a state qualifier at an upper weight, going 27-12 wrestling at 189 pounds. He was a North Section runner-up, and took third at districts before qualifying for states, earning him the Newcomer of the Year honors.
Wyalusing’s Daniel Fox put together a strong season, going 30-17 with silver medals at North Section and District IV, and finishing the season with a state berth. He’s the Most Improved Wrestler of the Year.
NEB’s Curt Cole led a talented but thin roster to a District IV Duals berth, their first in a decade, as the Panthers also had three regional qualifiers, and a state qualifier. The Panther staff are the Coaching Staff of the Year.
