NTL BASEBALL: WYALUSING USES 6-RUN FIFTH TO DOWN SAYRE (April 20, 2026)

Northern Tier Sports Report
WYALUSING — The young Wyalusing baseball team put together one of their most complete performances of the season in their 13-3 win over Sayre in five innings during NTL action Monday.

“I’ve been waiting for that all year,” said Wyalusing coach Chris Tinna. “It was a good team effort; high traffic on the base paths, pretty good defense, Dawson Biza threw a ton of strikes - he’s been great all year.”

The Rams pushed two across in the bottom of the first to start the game, with both teams scoring a run in the third.

A 4-run fourth saw Wyalusing take control with a 7-1 lead.

Sayre rallied with two runs in the top of the fifth, with the Rams responding by putting up a six spot in the bottom half to end the game.

The biggest play of the game didn’t involve any runs, though.

In the top of the second Sayre had runners on the corners with no outs when Wyalusing third baseman Griffin Sheldon caught a line drive.

He immediately tagged third, then threw to first to complete the triple play, killing what momentum Sayre had been building.

“That was huge,” said Tinna. “It was a real big play, a real good break. They came in and threw a real quick inning against us the next inning, so it was a good momentum shift there.”

Biza went all five innings on the mound, striking out none but allowing no walks, seven hits, and three runs, two of which were earned.

With three more games over the next four days the Rams needed a quick outing like that to save their pitching.

“That’s going to be real big this week,” Tinna said. “Strikes will be what we need from everybody.”

Michael Phillips (2-for-4) had two runs scored, and 2-RBI as Gage Tinna (2-for-3) drove in four runs.

Sheldon (1-for-2) had a double with 2-RBI and three runs scored, with Marshall Huston (1-for-2) hitting a double with three runs and an RBI.

Mahdden Hugo (1-for-2) had a double with a run scored, as Landry Tinna (1-for-2) scored twice.

Campbell Carr (1-for-2) drove in two runs as Owen Brown (1-for-3) and Jared VandeMark both crossed home.

Sheldon was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the first, then ran his way around the bases, eventually taking home off an errant throw on a steal of third.

Huston got the rally going again with a 1-out walk, then scored on a 2-out Gage Tinna single for the 2-0 lead.

After Sayre scored in the top of the third the Rams responded in the bottom half as Brown had a 1-out single. Carr would drive him home with a 2-out hit to make it 3-1.

Landry Tinna led off the fourth with a hit, followed by Sheldon drawing a walk two batters later.

Phillips would single in Landry Tinna, with Huston doubling in Sheldon for a 5-1 ball game.

After a second out Gage Tinna would take the ducks off the pond with a single that plated Phillips and Huston for the 6-run lead.

A 2-run Karter Green single in the top of the fifth got Sayre back into the game, cutting the deficit to four.

Hugo would lead off the bottom of the fifth with a double, followed by walks to Landry Tinna and VandeMark to load the bases.

VandeMark would score on a wild pitch, followed by Sheldon reaching home off a Phillips hit for an 11-3 lead.

Huston and Brown would draw back to back walks, with the final two runs coming on back to back calls of catcher’s interference.

Wyalusing (3-7) will host Troy on Tuesday.
