NTL SOFTBALL: TOWANDA POSTS STRONG SEASON IN 2026 (May 31, 2026)

Northern Tier Sports Report
Towanda softball had one of their best seasons in a generation this past year, and came up just short of raising a banner to show for it.

The Knights went 14-4 during the regular season, earning the third seed in the District IV, Class AAA playoffs and coming in second in the NTL Large School standings.

"It was an outstanding season, just didn't finish the way we wanted it, but outstanding nonetheless," said Towanda coach Dean Johnson. "Leila Cobb was phenomenal this season, and will only get better, as will the rest of the team. We have a great nucleus returning, and will look to finish what we started next season."

On a cold opening day Towanda lost 7-3 to the eventual league champs, Athens, but then went on an 8-game win streak.

They opened with close wins over Wyalusing (2-1), NPL (4-2), and Wellsboro (4-2), followed by victories over Troy (8-0), Canton (20-0), and NEB (14-0).

The second time around the division they beat Wyalusing (8-0) and South Williamsport (17-4) before falling to NPL (1-0).

They rebounded with four more wins against Wellsboro (5-3), Hughesville (3-0), Troy (6-0), and Williamson (11-3).

A gut wrenching 3-2 walk-off loss to Athens ended their league title hopes, but they came back with a pair of 10-0 wins over CV and Sayre.

They ended the regular season with a 1-0 loss to Tunkhannock, then fell in the quarterfinals of the district playoffs, 1-0, to Montoursville.

Everything started with Cobb, who went 119 2/3-innings this year with 210 strikeouts against 42 walks. She sported a 1.287 ERA on the year as she went 14-5.

After the seven runs in the opener against Athens Cobb only allowed 21 runs over her final 18 games.

At the plate Brooklyn Evans hit .456 with eight doubles, three home runs, and 23-RBI as Brynsen Vargason batted .327 with 15-RBI.

Paige Perry hit .303 in the lead-off spot with 22 runs scored.

Freshman Maris Cobb sported a .403 on base percentage and led the team with 23 runs scored while senior Caedence Wells had a .534 slugging percentage with three home runs, and 15-RBI.

The team will need to replace Evans and Wells going into next season but have a strong core returning with the Cobb sisters, Perry, and Vargason they have plenty to make a run at a title in 2027.
