NY BOYS TAKEDOWN PA IN DUALS ON DESMOND (June 7, 2026)
Northern Tier Sports Report
ATHENS — The New York boys wrestlers pulled away from PA as they picked up a 46-31 win during the third edition of the Duals on Desmond this past Saturday.
After two years of good weather Mother Nature threw a curveball this year.
A severe thunderstorm forced the Duals away from Desmond Street in Sayre to Athens High School, where they did the youth competition.
The skies cleared up enough for the girls contest to be held outdoors.
When it came time for the boys the dew set in, and made the mat unusable. That forced the boys back inside for the second half of the match.
It was a fast start for team NY as they scored three falls to open the boys competition to go up 18-0.
In the Future Stars competition Central Valley's Brayton Murtaugh pinned Wyalusing's Garrett Gowin in 3:59 to put NY up 6-0.
Waverly's Rhylee Stottler followed by pinning Wyalusing's Bostyn McMicken in 1:26, then Owego's Gavin Lovell got the fall over South Williamsport's Garrett Bacon in 3:51.
Sayre's Jordan Brown got PA on the scoreboard with an 11-3 win over Edison's Greg Golden, followed Wyalusing's Dan Fox winning 8-2 over Horseheads's Connor Warwick to cut it to 18-7.
Horseheads's Connor McAllister scored a 10-1 major over Canton's Levi Vermilya to extend New York's lead to 22-7.
NEB's Asher Kolesar won 7-2 over Homer's Owen Burhans to help PA chip away at the deficit.
Sherburne Earlville's Fredy Smith would pull out an 8-3 win over Athens' Chace VanDyke to push the NY lead to 15 points.
Athens' Treyton Barrett would pick up a 21-6 tech fall over Elmira's Lavonte Gibbons in 5:57 to make it a 10-point match.
NY, though, got a big 2-1 win from Oneonta's Clayton Ritter over Sullivan County's Andrew Kapec in second tie-breaker to put the Empire State up 28-15.
Towanda's Hagen Jones would score an 8-2 win over Horseheads' Kole Zufall, followed by Athens' Connor Davidson pinning Elmira's Josh Johnson in 30 seconds put PA within striking distance, 28-24.
Johnson City's William Ackley would come back with an 18-1 tech fall over NEB's Kale Howland to push the lead back to nine points.
Homer's Jack Brown then pinned Wellsboro's Hayden Stevens in 2:56 to see NY continue to pull away, 39-24.
Horseheads' Zachary Shrage majored Hughesville's Kile Hartman 18-6 to all but seal the deal as NY went up 42-24.
Towanda's Gage Evans would get a 17-8 major over Deposit-Hancock's Asaac Mead to cut it to 42-28, but the match was now out of reach for the Commonwealth.
Williamson's Luke Sottolano scored a 5-1 win over Susquehanna Valley's Trey Parker to make it 42-31, but in the final match of the night Deposit-Hancock's Landyn Shaffer won 12-2 over Muncy's Chase Boozer for the 46-31 final.
