TOWANDA BASEBALL'S BIG FINISH, NEB WRESTLING'S BOUNCE BACK, AND PLENTY OF TITLES HIGHLIGHT FIRST BATCH OF YEAR IN REVIEW (July 16, 2026)

Northern Tier Sports Report
It's year in a review time with the top 25 stories from this past school year, beginning at the bottom and moving up through.

25. Towanda baseball wins final four games to make districts - The Black Knights liked living on the edge most of the season, and gave their fans a thrill ride down the stretch. They needed to win their final four games to make districts, all within six days. Each win got progressively easier, beginning with a 1-0 win over Sayre that saw Avery Butts pitch six scoreless innings while scoring the winning run. They followed that with a 5-3 win over Edison as Harper Welles went 3-for-4 with 4-RBI. Then came the 11-0 win over Notre Dame as Lucas Vincent went 3-for-3 with three runs scored. The final win was a 13-0 victory over Neumann with Vincent rocking two triples as he went 4-for-4 with 3-RBI, and three runs scored. It was quite a run for a young team finding their feet.

24. Troy boys, Towanda girls claim Elmira Tournament titles - The wins meant something different to the two hoops teams. For a young boys team it helped them find their footing, especially since they needed to rally past Trumansburg for the 53-52 regional title. Troy out scored them 16-11 in the fourth with Trey Teribury named MVP after a 15-point, nine rebound, and four assist performance. Josiah Pesesky (11 points, eight rebounds) was named to the All-Tournament team, while Pryor Teribury (11-points, three boards), was named the Sixth Man. For the Lady Knights it was redemption from going 0-2 the year before. Johnson City led by 10 at one point in the first half, but Towanda chipped away, eventually taking a 23-22 lead before winning 41-34. Brynn Woodruff had 17 points, six boards, two blocks, and two steals to be named MVP, with Payton Perry earning the 'BSN Heart of the Game Award' with her nine points, and four steals. Mya Maynard would earn her 500th career rebound during the contest.

23. Towanda volleyball takes down Wellsboro on the road to qualify for districts - The Black Knights had one big goal for the 2025 season, make districts any way possible. And they chose the most difficult roads, needing a win over the defending district champions, Wellsboro, at the Hornet's Nest. It went five sets with Wellsboro winning the first 25-23, but the Knights gutted out a 26-24 win in the second set. They took a 2-1 lead with a 25-19 win in the third set, only to watch Wellsboro rally for a commanding 25-13 fourth set win. It was back and forth in the final set, but when the dust settled Towanda won 16-14. Karis Flynn had 20 digs, 36 assists, and 12 points for a triple double with Brooklyn Evans getting 14 kills. Lariah Long had a double-double of 10 kills, and 19 digs while Brynsen Vargason added 17 digs. Towanda would go on to beat Montoursville for this first district win this decade, knocking off two things on their list.

22. NEB wrestling qualifies for districts - During the Covid year of 2020-2021 NEB boys had just three wrestlers, none of whom made it out of sectionals. Since that moment coach Curt Cole has been slowly building the team back, culminating with this year's senior led group qualifying for team district play. In fact, they were the first team to qualify for district duals as they won their first eight matches of the season. The Panthers beat Montrose (44-18) and NP-Liberty (46-18), then swept the field at the Hughesville Duals. The 6-0 day ended with a thrilling 26-24 win over the hosts, themselves the district runners-up from the year before. Alex Gomez had the key 10-8 in that dual, while Mason Alexander got the tech fall at the end to seal the victory. The season ended with NEB having several district and regional qualifiers, along with freshman Asher Kolesar making it all the way Hershey. That's a long ways from Rome, but as far as the Panthers have come in the last five years.

21. Wyalusing's Jonathan Earle leads three Rams to the district podium in pole vault - Earle had come along way on the pole vault in his high school career, and at the District IV Championships he brought some teammates along with him. Earle came in as the second seed, but was clean through the four heights while his competition wasn't, giving Earle the edge. Earle was the lone one standing after 13-feet, then cleared the state standard of 13-feet, 6-inches on his way gold. Teammate Sullivan McCracken had a career day, as well, vaulting 12-foot to take home bronze, while Tyler Grover snuck onto the podium at 11-feet to finish eighth. It was quite the day for Green-and-Gold.
