THE WRAP-UP COUNTDOWN CONTINUES WITH MORE RUNNING, BOUNCE BACK SEASONS, AND BIG SHOTS (July 18, 2026)
Northern Tier Sports Report
The five on the list features more running, a thrilling end, and some bounce back action on the diamond.
15. Wyalusing softball reaches district final - Led by a strong senior class, Wyalusing was able to play for a championship this year. The Rams went 15-7 during the regular season, their most wins since 2019. They got big wins over NP-Liberty, and Athens this past year, and set themselves up for a playoff run. In the opener they defeated Williamson 7-3, using a big 3-run bottom third after the Warriors tied it up. It was a senior led effort with Addisyn Bly going 3-for-4 with three doubles and two runs scored, Treanna Nickeson going 2-for-4 with three runs scored, and Addison Fluck fanning 11 in the circle. That set up a showdown with top seed Northwest in the finals. Fluck pitched well, striking out five with just two walks and no earned runs, but Wyalusing couldn't get their bats going, managing just two hits in the 3-0 loss. Still, losing in a district final isn't a bad place for a season, and a career, to end.
14. Towanda edges Athens in OT on Farrell's bucket - Its rare that a league title comes down to one shot, but that's what happened this past winter. Losing most of the game Towanda rallied in the fourth, and Knight Darrius Farrell was struggling throughout the game. With time ticking off Farrell rose up and buried a game tying 3-pointer to send the contest into OT, where Towanda pulled away for a 54-49 win. Graham Welles had 15 points to lead the Knights off the bench in what was a bounce back victory for them. They were coming off an overtime loss against NEB, and had fallen to Athens earlier in the year. Had Athens won the game they would have ended up tied in the league standings, with the tie-breaker going to the Wildcats. In the end Towanda claimed their first division title in over a decade by one game - all going back to one 3-ball from the wing.
13. NEB baseball comes back from the brink - Few programs rebound after a year 'off', some never come back at all. Sayre boys and girls soccer merged with Athens after low numbers, Wyalusing golf and boys soccer eventually got their programs back after dropping them, while NEB golf is still gone. So it wasn't looking good when NEB baseball cancelled their 2025 season due to a lack of numbers. However, some holdovers from the previous years, plus a talented freshman class gave the Panthers enough of a boost to not just come back, but to have a winning season. They went 10-10, won the Blue Ridge Tournament title, and battled the defending district champs, CV, to a close loss in the semifinals. Senior Kohen Hugo led the charge wit a .371 average, 31 runs scored, and 18-RBI, while his freshman brother Cooper Hugo led the team with a .390 average, 20-RBI, and 15-runs scored. Fellow freshman Anthony Johnson hit .323 with 14-runs scored, and 13-RBI. Nearly half their starters were freshmen this year, while five of their seven pitchers that saw action were underclassmen. Just getting on the field this Spring was a win for NEB, the fact that they had success was just icing on the cake.
12. NEB runners claim a District IV title - Going into the District IV, Class A Boys Cross-country Championships the team title was up for grabs between NEB, Sullivan County, and Canton. For nearly half the race it looked like Sullivan County as going to nab the team title, but a strong final mile out of the Panthers allowed them to clinch their fourth straight district title. Jackson Martin (17.20.4) took third, but it was his brother, senior Russell Martin (18:20.4) who led the charge. He went from 20th to seventh during the second half of the race, while the three freshmen behind him - Levi Dewing (18:25.3), Keagan Netherton (18:42.9), and Xavier Lockwood (18:44.4) all went from 19th, or further back, top finishing in the top 12. It was enough to give them a 12-point win over the Griffins, and a new era of runners a chance to keep the NEB tradition going.
11. Towanda runners set the pace - Towanda boys and girls cross-country had one of the best joint seasons in program history. The two teams went undefeated in NTL dual meet action to claim league titles, with neither teams facing a close match. On the girls side Towanda came up just short of a state berth behind Lewisburg (third in the state) and Danville (seventh in the state). Freshman Maris Cobb and junior Izzy Larson both qualified for states as they went third and fourth at districts. Cobb would go on to take 17th in the Class AA field for a state medal. On the boys side Towanda took fourth as a team with sophomore Boom Thompson, and freshman Emmett Klees both earning state berths. The two squads were all underclassmen, giving them a chance to not just repeat in 2026, but finally get those team berths to states.
