Wyalusing golf returns this year as they look to take another step forward, both as a team and individually. The Rams would like to get back to the District IV team competition, while their top players that make individual districts would like to get a little further.

"The last two years we've had three guys go to districts, and none of them have gone to the second day," said Wyalusing coach Chad Romanowski. "I want to get the kids that have gone to districts the last two years, I want to get them to get over that hump to get to the second day."

The two he's eyeing are senior Myles Kershner, and junior Noah Kilmer. They return with plenty of experience, but also things to work on. 

Kershner has been fine tuning his short game, while Kilmer has been trying to add distance to his long game.

"It's nice because there's things to improve on," Romanowski said. "They know where they stand, and what they need to do to get over that hump that I talked about."

Kershner felt his short game - chips and putts - is what's been holding him back.

"That kind of screwed me at districts last year because it wasn't good enough," he said. 

His goal to be around 80, preferable below it when he can.

"That's what I've been at throughout the summer, so I'm just going to try to keep that going for myself," Kershner remarked. 

Kilmer has been trying to extend his range by hitting his driver and woods more.

"I'm trying to get them farther off the tee," he said. "I'm trying to get higher and longer."

He, too, is looking to shoot around 80, and going for 75 when he can.

"It's just course management," Kilmer said. "Hitting fairways, and greens, and making putts. When you don't hit greens you've got to get a safe putt."

On the team end of things the Rams are hoping to break .500 this season. They dug themselves a hole last year, and couldn't quite get out of it by season's end.

"We have to kind of find that momentum early," Romanowski said. "We're going to Happy Valley on Thursday and rolling into matches on the 17th, so we can't start slow, because it's a short season. I don't want to say it's a marathon, but it's not a spring - it's a 10K. We want to start hot, and stay hot."

They also have enough for a girls squad this year, which just adds to the excitement.

"I am excited to have a girls team this year," said Romanowski. "We had a girls team last year, but it wasn’t as consistent due to some injuries. I’m hoping that this year we can avoid those injuries and field a full schedule for the girls. From the first two days of practice, I’ve already seen significant improvement from Riley O’Connor compared to last year. We also have two freshmen who have the potential to grow into solid players. They haven’t played a lot of golf yet, so my goal is to get them out on the course as much as possible, allowing them to learn their own games while also helping them understand what to do in different situations on the course."

As girls golf takes off in the area Romanowski believes Wyalusing will help lead the way.

"I’ve said since my first year that my goal is for our golfers to score better in their last round of the season than they did in their first," he said. "I think the girls will show that exceptionally well this year, and I’m excited to see what all four of them can accomplish."

Across the program there's certainly no shortage of optimism. 

"We have a lot of kids, and a lot of potential," said Kershner. "It's just fun to be out here again."
