FOOTBALL: TOWANDA TAKES ON MONTGOMERY (October 15, 2026)

Northern Tier Sports Report
Towanda (3-4) heads to Montgomery (6-1) this week as they look to bounce back from their loss to Wellsboro.

The Red Raiders come in on a 3-game win streak after beating Sayre 56-7 last Friday.

"Montgomery is a physical and talented football team," said Towanda coach Jamie Wecker. "They are well coached and don’t make a lot of mistakes."

Last week the Knights had their moments offensively, but Wellsboro was able to bog them down at times and force a punt or turnover on downs.

"Really, when we watched the film we can see that we just aren’t stringing enough good plays together during a drive," Wecker said. "Whether it is a missed assignment, or a penalty, or miscommunication, we just have to be more fundamentally sound. And that starts with being ready to play mentally. Being able to ignore the outside noise and really focus on doing our jobs well."

The Raiders won't throw a pass if they don't have to, so that means Towanda has to be ready to fight in the trenches.

"Defensively, we have to be ready to match their physicality," Wecker said. "We need to put ourselves in the right positions and we need to finish tackles. Also, we can’t have mental lapses against a team like them."

KEYS TO THE GAME
Towanda - Win the battle of field position. Not every drive has to end in a score to be successful. If they can pin Montgomery deep a few times the pressure of getting out of their own end can help the Knights get big plays defensively.

Montgomery - Bend but don't break. Towanda has plenty of playmakers, so making them drive the ball will be key.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Joey Montonya, Towanda, LB - Montonya has two sacks and five tackles for loss for the Knights, and he'll be needed to help stop the Raiders.

Briar Person, Montgomery, RB - Persing has 31 carries, 284-yards and five touchdowns this year on the ground for the Raiders.
