Northern Tier Sports Report
STATE COLLEGE — Towanda golfers finished up their season at the PIAA Team Championships on Wednesday.
The Knights shot plus-36 as a team to take eighth, just two spots behind seventh place Oley Valley (plus-34).
Boom Thompson shot 76 to lead Towanda with Graham Welles and Owen Savercool both scoring 81. Jason Wickwire rounded out the scorers with 86, while Harper Welles finished with an 89.
"I couldn’t be more proud of our team," said Towanda coach Paul Lantz. "Individually, Graham and Boom had a fantastic season. Both improved their standing from last year. This week they hung tough. This tournament is a meat grinder. I know they didn’t achieve what they were hoping to, but I’m extremely proud of them. I’m excited to see Graham play at the next level and Boom has some unfinished business next year. Our team didn’t have our best round of the season today but they all kept grinding even when the putts weren’t rolling in. The growth that I have seen in all our players through the season is amazing. Graham Welles is our only senior on the boys side. He has grown into a great leader on our team and he will be missed. There were a lot of steps we took this year to prepare for this moment. We need to continue to improve so we are even better next year. We have talked before that it is about the journey and the memories we make along the way."
Thompson had a birdie on the par-5 fifth hole to go with 12 pars, while Graham had pars on the par-4 third hole, and and the par-5 18th hole to go with six pars.
Savercool had a birdie on the par-4 sixth hole and another on the par-4 15th hole to go with eight pars.
Wickwire finished with nine pars, while Harper Welles had a birdie on the par-4 third hole plus four pars.
"There are 260 AA golf teams in Pennsylvania and we are one of the top eight," said Lantz. "It is an incredible honor to participate in that event and represent the Towanda school district. It is a true team accomplishment. This team has lofty goals for next year and we will get started working toward those soon."
