HEPBURNVILLE — Wyalusing girls soccer made it interesting in the end, but ultimately couldn't stop South Williamsport in a 3-1 loss during District IV, Class A girls soccer action Tuesday.
"They had a lot of quick girls up top," said Wyalusing coach Katie Fischer. "If you look at the NTL, there's normally one quick girl up top, and we did a pretty good job this year finding a person to mark that quick person. The further on in the season you get in these situations. We have one Vayda (Rought), they probably have three Vaydas."
The Mounties had a 26-11 edge in shots and 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Wyalusing keeper Sierra Gromley had a busy night, making 15 saves, while her counterpart, Annika Harding, stopped seven shots.
It was 1-0 South at the half, and they would go up by as much as 3-0 when Wyalusing freshman Greta Bohn got the Rams on the scoreboard in the final 10 minutes of the contest.
"I said to the girls, that shows more than anything that you didn't give up," said Fischer. "That's one of the things that we're always preaching, and they didn't put their heads down and say they were done."
Wyalusing had some possession in the first few minutes but after that South controlled the match.
They tested Gromley with a long shot at the 34:45 mark, and she had no trouble with it. For much of the first half South was content to test Gromley from range.
At the 21:30 mark they were able to get a cross inside the 10, but Aleta O'Connor was in position on defense, and kept the pass from finding its mark.
Three minutes later, though, Italia Mangiardi got another cross inside the 10 and this time South's Sofia Sartori capitalized by putting it in the back of the net at the 18:57 mark.
That spurred Wyalusing to their first real goal scoring chance as Rought beat the defense down the right side, then crossed it across the face of the goal.
None of the Rams could get a touch on it until it ended up outside the 18, where Lia Fischer's attempt was high.
South came out strong in the second half as Mangiardi nearly had a goal off a Kloey Persun pass, but the attempt was over the cross-bar.
At the other end Morningstar had a good look at the equalizer as she got a pass right around the 10, but the defense recovered before she could get a shot off.
Then, at the 27:16 mark, Coco Kline was got a corner kick in the middle of the penalty box, then turned and fired to make it 2-0 Mounties.
Mangiardi got their final goal with 16:21 left in the game as she got a deflection from a keeper save and hit the back of the net for a 3-0 lead.
Wyalusing's goal came with 12:31 left. A free kick over the keeper's head nearly went it, but South was able to save it out of bounds for a corner kicks.
The corner found the senior Rought at the top of the box, and she passed it to the freshman Bohn, who beat the keeper on the left side of the goal to make it 3-1.
The Rams put on a press after that, but South's defense didn't break.
Coach Fischer found it tough to say good-bye to her four seniors after the game, one of which, Alysha Botts, wasn't able to see the field at all this season.
"I know that we've had a great season without Alysha's help but I can't say that I didn't question a couple times - what would we look like with Alysha'," Fischer said. "I definitely think that she would have been a benefit, but our three seniors were just really amazing. Aleta grew immensely this season, and even from last year - we were able to use her on defense, in the midfield, and up top. Vayda, the coaches in the NTL said that she's the headache, which I think is funny, and I think Ava (King) probably is one that surprised everybody to be able to step in Treanna's shoes, and hold that back line together."
