FOOTBALL: TOWANDA TOPS WYALUSING TO TAKE BRONZE HELMET (October 31, 2026)

TOWANDA — Towanda played offense by committee and took advantage of good field position throughout the game to roll to a 50-0 shutout of rival Wyalusing  in NTL football action here Friday evening.

A dozen Black Knights toted the rock, and eight more players caught passes from three different quarterbacks as Towanda put the pigskin in the end zone on seven possessions, all starting in Wyalusing territory.

“We’ve got some playmakers, so we try to get it around to as many as we can,” said Towanda coach Jamie Wecker. “It does a couple things. It keeps us healthier. Kids aren't getting beat up as much and it makes it more difficult to defend, and keep working on doing that, because we're going to run into a pretty good team, whoever it is, next week, and we’ve got to be able to use our offense to its fullest potential.”

Meanwhile, the Rams struggled to generate a solid offensive threat in their final game of the 2026 season.

“It was a tough season,” said Wyalusing coach Jeff Hindman, “and at the end of the day, I couldn't be prouder of the 23 guys who stuck it out, showed up every game, showed up every practice and put in the work.

“I know that a lot of people think they understand football and think they understand it, but at the end of the day, I got coaches and I got 23 players who understand this season, and they're the only ones who really know the work that we put in. I am immensely proud of these boys for fighting until the very end. You know, sometimes it just doesn't go in your favor.”

Towanda took control of the contest from the start.

After forcing a three-and-out to start the game, the Knights’ offense started at the Rams’ 46 yard line. Drew Maghamez scored on a 33-yard run three plays later. Brayden Spencer’s PAT kick made it 7-0 at 8:41.

Wyalusing’s next possession resulted in a Gage Evans interception at the Wyalusing 44 and he was brought down at the 41. Reese Sluyter picked up 21 yards on a quarterback keeper and Brown followed with a reverse-direction 20-yard touchdown run with 5:10 on the first quarter clock and Spencer’s kick made it 14-0.

Towanda wasn’t done with its first period scoring display as they took possession of a punt at the Rams’ 48 and five plays later, Evans scored on a 12-yard run up the gut. Spencer booted the lead to 21-0 with 1:39 left in the first.

A 22-yard punt return by Evans, coupled with a blocking below the waist penalty on the punt put the pigskin at the Wyalusing 20. A holding penalty and a tackle for a 5-yard loss pushed the ball back to the 40 and  Sluyter connected with Shane Maghamez for a 40-yard TD strike at 9:06 of the second quarter. A high snap forced Sluyter to scramble from his holder’s spot and he tossed the rock to Curtis Maynard for the PAT to give the Knights a 29-0 cushion.

The Rams coughed up the ball at their own 22 on the ensuing possession and Brown bolted 21 yards on Towanda’s next play. Maynard scored on a 1-yard run and Spencer’s kick made it 36-0 at 6:56.

Following a three-and-out, Evans returned the punt 13 yards to the Rams’ 27. He tacked on runs of 10 and 15 yards to set up a 2-yard TD run by Cameron Allis, who typically lines up in the trenches. Another Spencer kick made it 43-0 with 3:08 left in the half.

Gabe Wolf made a one-handed diving interception at the Wylausing 35 on the next play from scrimmage and Maynard dashed 35 yards to paydirt for the game’s final TD. Elli Cook split the uprights with the PAT kick for the game’s final point.

The Rams’ Jacob Gromley pounced on a loose ball at his own 15 to spoil a Towanda drive to start the second half and the visitors worked the ball out to the 46 before turning it over on downs.

They recovered another Knights fumble on the next play, but again turned the ball over on downs at the Knights’ 30.

Towanda’s final drive was thwarted by a sack and the Rams would get the ball back at their own 41 for one final attempt at getting on the scoreboard.

Gromley and Conner Earle worked the ball to the Knights’ 33 on five runs, then Wiley Trobaugh hit Tucker Harvey for eight yards and a first down at the 25, but the Rams ran out of time.

“I think it was a great team effort,” Wecker said. “Offensively, our line did what it's been doing for the last few weeks, and really making big holes for the running backs. The running backs were getting the inside yards, the dirty yards. They're doing what they need to do. Our quarterbacks, I think Reese has really improved with his comfort in the pocket and he just looks more comfortable throwing the ball while he's seeing the field better. All the way around, I thought it was a really good team effort.”

Despite an 0-10 season, with a youthful group of players on this year’s roster, Hindman has reason to look forward to the 2027 campaign.

“Out of 23, I’ve got six seniors, so we're bringing back a decent group of guys, a lot of younger guys who got a lot of experience this year,” he said. “And that's the thing. We had five or six freshmen, sophomores, starting every single game because that's all we had, but those guys stepped up and they were ready to go.”

Towanda (5-5) racked up 303 yards offense while holding the Rams to 99.

The Knights collected 195 yards rushing and another 108 through the air.

Brown led the ground attack with 94 yards on four carries, respectively. Other key contributors were Maynard (4-37), Evans (6-32) and Sluyter (1-21).

Sluyter went 3-for-5 for 59 yards through the air, Clint Tuttle was 1-for-1 for 18 yards and Elijah Johnson was 1-for-2 for 31 yards.

Shane Maghamez had a 40-yard reception and Scott Schrader added a 31-yard catch.

Gromley was the Rams’ leading rusher with 28 yards on seven runs and Earle  had 27 yards on 22 carries.

Trobaugh went 5-for-14 for 32 yards with Harvey grabbing four passes for 25 yards.
