ATHENS — Canton coach Jackie Thompson liked what she saw from her squad as they swept South Williamsport, 3-0, during the District IV, Class AA Volleyball semifinals Saturday.
"They played really well today," Thompson said. "Offensively, we just played very well at the net. We had a lot of assists, our passing was well - I think this momentum will be good carrying us forward into Thursday."
The Warriors won the first two sets 25-15 and 25-15, then held off a Mountie rally in the third set for the 25-19 win.
Makenna Seachrist had nine kills, four digs, five aces, one block, and four points for Canton, as Danah Wesneski notched five kills, four points, eight digs, and an assist.
Addy Cardona had five kills with two blocks, and Hannah Walters added six kills, with one dig.
Cailyn Van Noy finished with 17 digs and two points, as Kaybree Kendall had 10 points, eight aces, and five digs.
Emilia Pepper had seven points, four kills, and four digs, with Peyton Taylor getting 18 assists, two kills, one ace, and a dig.
Brenna Van Noy chipped in with three assists, and a dig.
The first two sets Canton jumped out to leads of 7-0 and 8-0 and never looked back.
In the third set, though, it was back and forth early with South taking an 8-5 lead at one point.
Canton rallied to take a 10-9 advantage. The two teams went back and forth before the Warriors out scored them 13-8 down the stretch.
"It was good for them to have a little edge early on," Thompson said about the third set. "They came right back out and just kept swinging, and that's what I've been asking for from them."
They face Williamson in the final on Thursday at 6 p.m. The other Warrior team beat Sugar Valley 3-0 in the morning semifinal.
Canton split with Williamson this year so this will be the rubber match, along with being for the district title.
"They're very equally matched teams, and I think it'll be a really good district finals game," said Thompson.
This will be the third year in a row Canton has made the district finals, but have finished as runners up the last two seasons.
"I've been asking of them - don't give in, don't roll over and just keep swinging," said Thompson.
