BAKER'S SPORTS PEN: ANOTHER CLOSE ATHENS-WYALUSING GAME; MORE FROM NTL, DISTRICT 4 (2020-09-30)

For the sixth consecutive season, the Athens-Wyalusing outcome was once again decided by a touchdown or less. The visiting Wildcats returning to the Valley with a 21-14 victory as they improved to 2-0, while the Rams dropped their first game in three contests.

Wyalusing is probably looking back at a second quarter, 13-play drive that came up empty with the game tied at 7-7.

Athens answering with its own 15-play march to the end zone to close out the first half. The drive, capped by Mason Lister’s short scoring plunge into the end zone, covered 73 yards, and all but used up any time left in the second quarter.

Valley fans are blessed with a pair of talented sophomore signal-callers in Lister and Sayre’s Lucas Horton. Both have put together solid efforts in their teams’ opening two games.

Horton has completed more than 50 percent of his passes for 235 yards. He ran for a pair of scores and teamed with Jackson Hubbard on a 21-yard touchdown pass in the Redskins’ win over Cowanesque Valley.

Lister has totaled 354 yards and connected on 59 percent of his passes, including one touchdown. He ran for a pair of short scores in the Wildcats’ win over Wyalusing, while throwing for 184 yards. Against Wyalusing, Lister completed passes to seven different receivers.

Troy’s Caleb Binford put together a career night with a 201-yard effort on his way to three scores. The speedy running back missing out on a 300-yard, five touchdown night with scoring runs of 80 and 56 yards called back.

Binford leads NTL running backs with 359 yards rushing to go with seven touchdowns, and is also one of the top backs in the district.

Sayre’s David Northrup had a nice 111-yard effort against Cowanesque Valley in the Redskins’ 35-14 win. Sayre just missed out on a 400-total yardage effort.

Some large numbers lighting up District Four scoreboards this past weekend as winning teams averaged 38 points a contest. Southern Columbia leading the way with a 67-0 win over Warrior Run.

Gavin Garcia’s 133 yards rushing on just five carries set the pace for Southern’s 309-yard ground attack against Warrior Run. Garcia, now with five touchdowns in the Tigers’ opening two wins, ripped off a 75-yard scoring run early in the third quarter.

Southern also used a kickoff return, a fumble return and a “pick six” to net touchdowns in the victory.

Muncy and Loyalsock both topped 50 points in big wins over CMVT and Hughesville, respectively. Loyalsock, in its first game of the season, scored all of its points (55) in the first half against Hughesville and netted more than 400 total yards for the game. Not missing a beat, the Lancers, on the first play of the game, returned the opening kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown.

Danville’s K.J. Riley threw for 216 yards and two scores as the Ironmen easily defeated Hughesville 35-14.

The Shikellamy defense allowing just 90 total yards in tossing a shutout at Milton.

South Williamsport’s Zack Miller rushed for 256 yards and four touchdowns in the Mounties’ 33-14 season-opening victory against Montgomery. Included in Miller’s totals were scoring runs of 80 and 57 yards. South piled up 471 total yards — 383 on the ground.

Jersey Shore’s Brandon Wheary tossed four touchdown passes as the Bulldogs defeated Central Mountain for their third straight win.

Montgomery quarterback Logan Almeida has thrown for 599 yards in the Red Raiders’ opening three games. Colby Springman and Coltin Hans both have 14 receptions. Ben Marino and Maurice Walters each have 13 catches.

Columbia Montour Vo-Tech did not attempt a single pass in its 56-24 loss to undefeated Muncy.
