NTL SOFTBALL: CANTON USES 7TH INNING RALLY TO DOWN TROY (2022-05-10)

EAST TROY — In a back and forth contest, Canton used three seventh inning runs to break a 13-13 tie to edge Troy, 16-13, in NTL softball action Tuesday.


Canton jumped out early with a 5-1 lead after the first inning, but a 7-run second from Troy saw them go on top 8-7.


The two teams had three runs each in the third, while Canton took a 1-run lead in the fourth with two runs.


The Warriors made it 13-11 with a run in the fifth, but Troy tied it up with two runs in the sixth.


Madison Hulbert (2-for-3) had a home run, with 3-RBI, and a run scored, for Canton, as Emmi Ward (2-for-4) and Keri Wesneski (2-for-5) each had doubles. Emmi Ward also scored five times, with Wesneski scoring twice, while knocking in a run.


Mae Kinner (2-for-3) knocked in three runs with a run scored, while Taryn Acla (1-for-2) scored three times, and drove in two runs. Sara Saar (1-for-2) scored twice, and had 2-RBI, while Molly Ward scored a run.


Keri Wesneski got the win, striking out eight with seven walks, 13 hits, and 13 runs scored, with just four earned.


Troy saw two players hit home runs - Madi Palmer (1-for-4) and Tyra Williams (2-for-3). Palmer scored three times, and had 3-RBI, while Williams scored once, and had 3-RBI.


Kali Ayres (2-for-4) had a double, with two runs, and 2-RBI, while Amber James (2-for-4) scored a run, Caitlyn Knapp (2-for-4) scored twice, and Rachel Kingsley (2-for-5) also had a multi-hit game.


Abigail Wrisley (1-for-5) scored, Olivia Champluvier (1-for-5) scored a run, with an RBI, and Olivia Tate crossed home twice.


Champluvier started, and went 3 1/3-innings with one strikeout, four walks, six hits, and 10 runs, eight of which were earned, to get the loss.


Williams went the final 3 2/3-innings, with three strikeouts, four walks, four hits, and six runs, four of which were earned.


In the top of the first Emmi Ward would get walked, then later scored on an Acla bunt.


Wesneski got the rally started again with a double, and after a Molly Ward walk, a Saar single scored Wesneski. Kinner then brought home both Molly Ward and Saar with a hit to make it 4-0.


Hulbert would drive in Kinner for the 5-0 lead.


In the bottom half of the inning Troy used two walks, and an error to get runners on, with Champluvier driving Tate in with a ground out, to cut it to 5-1.


Canton added two more in the second as Emmi Ward doubled, then scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Acla.


After two outs were made Acla would score on a wild pitch to make it 7-1 Canton.


Troy came back big in the bottom half of the inning, as Wrisley and Knapp hit back to back singles, setting up Palmer’s 3-run home run to cut it to 7-4.


After a second out was made Troy went with two, beginning with Ayres singling. Champluvier would reach on an error, allowing Ayres to score. After a James single Williams hit a 3-run dinger to put the Trojans up 8-7.


Hulbert erased the deficit with a lead-off home run in the third. Later in the inning Emmi Ward would reach on a fielder’s choice, then scored two batters later on a Wesneski hit to put the Warriors back up 9-8.


Acla, who also had a single, would score on an error for a 10-8 lead.


Troy answered in the bottom half of the inning, as Knapp led off with a single. Palmer would walk, followed by Knapp off a Tate bunt. 


That set up Ayres 2-run double to put the Trojans up 11-10.


In the following inning Saar would walk for Canton, followed by Kinner singling. Saar would later score on a wild pitch, followed by Hulbert driving in Kinner on a sacrifice fly to put the Warriors back up 12-11.


In the fifth Emmi Ward would reach on an error, then score on another one to make it 13-11 Canton.


Troy would tie the game up in the sixth, as Palmer would reach on an error. After a second out was made, Ayres was hit by a pitch, followed by Champluvier loading the bases by getting on off a Canton defensive miscue.


Palmer and Ayres would both score on errors to knot the game up at 13-all.


Canton had the final say in the seventh, as Emmi Ward reach on a single. After an Acla walk, Emmi Ward and Acla would both score off an error from Wesneski’s bat to go up 15-13.


Wesneski would later score on a Saar sacrifice bunt for a 16-13 lead.


Troy looked to rally in the seventh, as Williams and Kingsley led off with hits. They would load the bases with a 1-out walk to Knapp, but back to back fly outs by Canton secured the win.


Canton will travel to Towanda on Wednesday, while Troy is at Towanda on Friday.
