NTL BASEBALL: NEB FALLS TO BENTON IN EXTRA INNINGS (2022-05-10)

BENTON — NEB fell 7-6 to Benton in eight innings, who leads the District IV, Class A standings, during non-league baseball action Monday.

Benton was able to rally in the eighth to get the walk-off win.


The odd innings were kind to the Panthers as they had two in the first, one in the third and fifth, and two more in the seventh.


Josh Stanton (2-for-4), Garrett Cooper (2-for-4), and Cayden McPherson (2-for-4) all had multi-hit games for NEB. Josh Stanton scored twice, with Cooper scoring once, and knocking in a run, while McPherson had 2-RBI, with one of his hits a double.


Dylan Donnelly (1-for-3) had a double with a run scored, while Clay Wiggins (1-for-4) scored twice, and had 2-RBI.


All told, the top five in NEB’s line-up went 8-for-19 in the contest.


Jack Shumway started, and went two innings, with three hits, and two earned runs.


Josh Stanton came on in relief, and took the loss, going 5 1/3-innings, with three strikeouts, three walks, nine hits, and five runs, two of which were earned.


In the first Donnelly led off with a walk, followed by Josh Stanton getting a single. Wiggins would reach on an error, allowing Donnelly to score, while Cooper hit in Josh Stanton, for the 2-0 lead.


In the third Wiggins would reach on an error, and score on an error after stealing second base.


NEB’s run in the fifth came as Josh Stanton had a lead-off hit, then stole second. He would get hit in by McPherson.


In the top of the seventh they scored two runs, as Wiggins led off with a hit. Cooper then reached on an error, followed by McPherson doubling in Wiggins. Cooper later scored on an error.
