NTL BASEBALL: BEHIND A BIG DAY FROM BEERS, CANTON TOPS TOWANDA (2022-05-11)
Northern Tier Sports ReportWYSOX — Michael Beers went 3-for-4 as Canton was able to top Towanda, 9-5, during NTL baseball action Wednesday.
It was the Armed Forces Appreciation Game for Towanda, with both teams wearing camouflage uniforms to show their support.
It was scoreless through three when both teams pushed a run across in the fourth. The Warriors broke open the flood gates with five runs in the fifth, but Towanda came back with three of their own.
Canton would take an 8-4 lead with two more runs in the sixth, then both teams score a run in the seventh for the 9-5 final.
Beers’ day included a home run, a run scored, and 3-RBI, while Cohen Landis (2-for-4), and Cooper Kitchen (2-for-4) also had multi-hit games. Kitchen also scored twice.
Holden Ward (1-for-3) scored twice, Weston Bellows (1-for-4) scored once and drove in two runs, Gavin Morse (1-for-2) scored twice, and also had 2-RBI, with Brenen Taylor crossing home as well.
Bellows went the stance to get the win, striking out nine with one walk, seven hits, and five runs, one of which was earned.
Octavious Chacona (2-for-4) had 2-RBI, while Chase Parker (2-for-4) scored a run. Teagan Irish (1-for-4) scored a run, and drove one in, Owen Clark (1-for-4), had an RBI, while Garrett Chapman (1-for-3) also had a hit.
Jack Wheaton and Austin Fowler both scored for the Knights.
Chacona went the first five innings to strikeout nine, with three walks, six hits, and six earned runs, to take the loss. Alex Bowman pitched the final two innings, allowing one walk, four hits, and three runs, one of which was earned.
In the fourth Canton got on the scoreboard as Beers singled in Morse for a 1-0 lead.
Towanda struck back in the bottom half of the inning, as, with two outs, Kaleb Cassellbury scored on a 2-out Clark hit to knot the game up.
In the top half of the fifth Ward drew a 1-out walk, followed by Kitchen singling. Ward and Kitchen then scored off a Bellows hit for a 3-1 lead.
Morse then hit in Bellows, with Morse then scoring off a Beers hit. The final run came as Taylor stole home on a passed ball to make it 6-1 Warriors.
Towanda would strike back in the bottom half, and did it with two outs. Fowler got it going by reaching on an error, then, with two gone, Irish singled in Fowler to make it 6-2.
Irish would later score on a deep fly ball from Parker that was dropped, with Parker scoring off a Chacona hit to cut it to 6-4.
In the sixth Canton would load the bases as Landis singled, Ward reached on an error, and Kitchen drew a walk.
After an out Ward scored on a Morse sacrifice fly, followed by Kitchen stealing home to make it 8-4.
Then, in the seventh, Beers led off the inning with a solo shot to center field for Canton’s ninth run.
Towanda would get one back in the bottom half, as Wheaton led off by reaching on an error. Then, after two outs, Chacona singled him in to make it 9-5.
After an error put another Towanda runner on, Bellows induced a ground out to end the game.
Canton will play their third game in four days as they host Troy on Thursday, while Towanda travels to CV on Monday.
