NTL TRACK & FIELD: A PREVIEW FOR THE BOYS' DISTRICT IV CHAMPIONSHIPS (2022-05-18)
Northern Tier Sports ReportThe District IV Track and Field performance lists are out, giving everybody a good idea of where things stand come Thursday and Saturday.
The top two automatically qualify for states, while those after can advance if they hit the state standard, up to the eighth place. The top 8 for Class AA earn medals.
Thursday evening looks warm with a mix of sun and clouds, while Saturday could see the thermometer tip past 90 degrees, as a stray afternoon shower can’t be ruled out.
100 (State standard: 11.30)
Six sprinters come in already having hit the state standard already this year, led by Southern Columbia’s Braeden Wisloski (10.84). Two NTL runners - Athens’ Jaden Wright (11.24) and Wellsboro’s Jack Poirier (11.28) - have hit the mark, doing so at the NTL Championships last week.
200 (State standard: 22.88)
Only Milton’s Chris Aviles (22.88) has hit the state standard, with Athens’ Jaden Wright (23.50) the only NTL runner in the top 8.
400 (State standard: 50.70)
Nobody has hit the state mark, though the field is tight at the top, with the top four all within a second of each other. South Williamsport’s Hayden Swinehart (51.02) is the top seed. The only NTL runner in the top 8 is Williamson’s Elias Kaufman (52.83), currently seeded fifth.
800 (State standard: 1:59.70)
Hughesville’s Morgan Gavitt (1:58.65) is the only runner under the state standard coming in, but Williamson’s Nathaniel Welch (2:02.23) comes in seeded third. Welch’s teammates Owen Cummings (2:03.84) and Kristian Mitzdail (2:04.80) are seeded sixth and eighth, and should be in the fast heat.
1600 (State standard: 4:31.13)
Hughesville’s Morgan Gavitt (4:22.38) leads the field again, but there are a total of three runners who have gone under the state standard, including Williamson’s Owen Cummings (4:30). The fast heat should be packed with NTL runners as Williamson’s Kristian Mizdail (4:35.27), Athens’ Kyle Anthony (4:39.08), and NP-Mansfield’s Noah Shedden (4:41.45) are all in the top 8 with Cummings.
3200 (State standard: 9:48.01)
Three runners come in already hit the state standard, with East Juniata’s Logan Strawder (9:26.16) flirting with the district record of 9:24.92, set by NEB’s Sam Williams. Williamson’s Owen Cummings (9:48.59) and Kristian Mizdail (9:50.91), along with NPM’s Noah Shedden (10:01.21) are all close to the standard.
110 Hurdles (State standard: 15.5)
Four hurdlers come in under the state standard, led by defending state champion, SCA’s Jake Rose (14.14). Troy’s Dustin Hagin (14.97) is seeded second, while Athens’ Levi Kuhns (15.95) is also in the top eight.
300 Hurdles (State standard: 40.80)
Two hurdlers come in under the state standard, with SCA’s Jake Rose (39.27) leading the way again. The NTL has two in the top 8 with Williamson’s Duncan Kerr (41.66) and Troy’s Dustin Hagin (42.02), at sixth and seventh.
4x100 Relay (State standard: 44.30)
No surprise Southern Columbia (44.04) comes in with the highest seed, with a total of two teams under the state standard coming in. Wellsboro (45.54) is the only NTL team in the top 8, seeded seventh, while Williamson (45.86) and Athens (45.99) are ninth and 10th.
4x400 Relay (State standard: 3:29.60)
Hughesville (3:34.05) leads a highly competitive mile relay, with Williamson’s relay (3:38.96) seeded fifth. Athens (3:40.66) is seeded ninth.
4x800 Relay (State standard: 8:15.55)
Hughesville (8:08.85) comes in under the standard, with NTL teams Athens (8:48.35) and NEB (8:57.09) seeded sixth and seventh. The wildcard team is Williamson (9:56) - if they run their best 4x800 relay they could hit the state standard.
High Jump (State standard: 6-feet, 3-inches)
Nobody has hit the state standard, with Southern Columbia’s Tyler Arnold (6-feet, 1-inch) the top seed. It could be another crap shoot at the top, much like last year, with NEB’s Austin Kithcart, and Wyalusing’s Ethan Lewis and Grady Cobb all coming in at 5-feet, 10-inches. The district can send more than two athletes to states, even if they don’t hit the state standard, as long as they tie for first or second - example: if there is one champion, and four second place finishers, all five will advance to the state meet.
Pole Vault (State standard: 13-feet, 6-inches)
Montoursville’s Brayden McKibbon (13-feet, 7-inches) comes in as the lone vaulter who has gone over the state standard, while Towanda’s Mitchell Mosier (13-feet) comes in tied for second. Ties here work the same way as in high jump.
Long Jump (State standard: 21-feet, 6-inches)
Southern Columbia’s Jake Rose (22-feet, 1-inch) is the only jumper coming in at over the state standard, but defending district champion, Wyalusing’s Kashawn Cameron (21-feet, 5-inches), is close. There are three other NTL jumpers in the top seven: Troy’s Dustin Hagin (21-feet, 2-inches) in third, Troy’s Colin Loveland (20-feet, 7-inches) in sixth, and Williamson’s Mason Kelsey (20-feet, 7-inches) in seventh.
Triple Jump (State standard: 44-feet)
Two jumpers come in over the state standard - Bloomsburg’s Nasir Head (45-feet, 11-inches) and Troy’s Dustin Hagin (44-feet). There are two other NTL jumpers in the top five: Wellsboro’s Aiden Gehman (42-feet, 4-inches) and Troy’s Colin Loveland (41-feet, 9 1/4-inches) in fourth and fifth. Towanda’s Logan Lambert (41-feet, 5-inches) comes in eighth, and missed the state mark by less than an inch a year ago.
Shot Put (State standard: 49-feet, 6-inches)
Milton’s Cole Goodwin (52-feet, 9-inches) is one of two throwers coming in over the state mark. Troy’s Mason Imbt (47-feet, 7 1/2-inches) is seeded third, while NEB’s Daniel Seeley (46-feet, 5 3/4-inches) comes in seeded fifth.
Discus (State standard: 148-feet)
Three throwers come in over the state standard, including NEB’s Dan Seeley (152-feet, 3-inches), seeded third. Mt. Carmel’s Matt Scicchitano (166-feet, 2-inches) leads the field. NEB’s Ethan Finch (137-feet, 11-inches) and Canton’s Kyle Kapichok (133-feet, 10-inches) come in seeded seventh and eighth.
Javelin (State standard: 176-feet)
Nobody has hit the state standard yet in District IV, as Northwest’s Liam Reinard (167-feet, 11-inches) leads the field. No NTL thrower is seeded in the top 8.
Notes: While there are no NTL teams in the Class AAA field, the 100 meters may be worth a watch. Seven sprinters are seeded under the state standard of 11.1, and four come in under 11 seconds.
