NTL TRACK & FIELD: TROY'S HAGIN, GETOLA EARN DISTRICT TITLES (2022-05-22)

WILLIAMSPORT — Troy crowned two district champions on Saturday - Anneliese Getola in the 100, and Dustin Hagin in the triple jump - during the District IV, Class AA Track and Field Championships.

Hagin won the triple jump 44-feet, 6 1/4-inches, edging out the top seed, Bloomsburg’s Nasir Heard, by less than three inches.

“I wish the second guy that was seeded ahead of me could have kept jumping, because he’s so good,” Hagin remarked. “But he’ll be going to states, so I’m excited to see what he does when he gets there.”

Hagin went over 44-feet in all three of flight jumps, but got the winning jump in his first attempt during the championship flight.

“Because I’ve started this year I’ve kind of been learning on the goal,” Hagin explained. “And every jump is something new to work on, so I’ve been trying to get as many reps in as possible.”

Despite being new he’s certainly happy to have the success he’s been having.

“I definitely can’t complain about it,” said Hagin.

He’ll also be going to states in the 110 hurdles, where he medaled at the state meet a year ago, with his second place time of 15.01.

“I want to run another sub-15 like I did at NTLs,” Hagin said. “So at states that’s the goal, but I’m happy with it.”

He feels he just needs a couple tweaks here and there to get back into the 14’s.

“I was bounding super high over the hurdles,” explained Hagin. “So if I can drop my distance between myself on the hurdle, and just run as fast as I can, I think I can definitely run sub-15.”

The defending state champion, Southern Columbia’s Jake Rose, was in the race, and he set a new district record in 14.0.

“It’s fun,” Hagin said. “It’s always nice to have someone to push through, but, also, at the same time, it’s like, he’s insane, and I’m so happy for him, especially setting the new district record - that’s crazy.”

Getola came in as the top seed in the 100, and kept her seed throughout the prelims, and winning the finals in 12.61, which is under the state standard.

“I was really nervous right before the race,” admitted Getola. “I had a breakdown, and then I realized it’s just me against myself, and what they rank me at. I’m glad that I got what I was seeded as, and proved myself.”

Getola pulled away the last 30 meters after a fair start.

“I thought my start was a lot better than it usually was, so that was really exciting,” she said. “I was very surprised that I got a chance to pull away, and prove myself, because I’ve usually been really close to them.”

Last year Getola didn’t even make the finals, but now she’s running over a half second faster.

“I think it’s just a mindset, because I placed my freshman year, and then last year I didn’t,” she said. “So getting to that point, I really think it was just mindset, not ability.”

Getola was also eighth in the 200 in 27.02, while Hagin took seventh in the 300 hurdles in 42.23.

Also for the Trojans, Colin Loveland (41-feet, 10-inches) was fifth in the triple jump, while Seth Seymour (11-feet) finished 12th in the pole vault.

Jacob Hinman (53.29) was 12th in the 400, Hart Houseknecht (10:55.64) finished 12th in the 3200, Isais Watkins (24.47) came in 17th in the 200, Caelyn Pine (1:05.38) was 17th in the 400, Bailey Johnson (8-feet, 6-inches) took 17th in the pole vault, and Elizabeth Geer (30-feet, 7 1/4-inches) took 19th in the triple jump.

The girls’ 4x100 relay of Pine, Geer, Getola, and Carl Weiffen was 10th in 52.93, while the boys’ 4x100 relay of Loveland, Wyatt Hodlofski, Jacob Wales, and Watkins took 11th in 46.70.

The boys’ 4x400 relay of Seymour, Wales, Hinman, and Watkins finished 15th in 3:53.09.
