SUSQUEHANNA RIVER RATS 14U CLAIM COOPERSTOWN TITLE (2022-07-03)

COOPERSTOWN — The Susquehanna River Rats 14U won the Cooperstown Backyard Classic Sunday, going 5-0 over the weekend.

They won the first game 9-2 over the New England Ravens on Abner Doubleday Field, then won the second 13-3 over the NP Select. The River Rats played three games on Sunday, beating the CT Fury 5-4, the New England Ravens again, 4-3, and then defeated the LTRC Comets 10-3 in the title game.


All three teams had close ties to the Susquehanna River - the river starts at Cooperstown, goes through the drawing area for the Susquehanna River Rats, and ends in Maryland just north of Baltimore.


The River Rats earned rings and wooden bats with their title.


In the first game Orlandini went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and an RBI, while Kenny Mapes was 1-for-4 with 2-RBI. 


Logan Ayotte was 3-for-3 with an RBI, Conner Davidson went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, while Eli Chapman scored a run, and drove in two. Nick Grazul scored twice, while Cooper Robinson and Cohen Flynn each had an RBI, with Matthias Welles and Karter Green both crossing home.


Green got the start, and went four innings with five strikeouts, three hits, and two runs, one of which was earned. Flynn went the final three innings with eight strikeouts.


In the win over the NP Select Green had a hot bad, going 3-for-3 with a home run, three runs scored, and 4-RBI, while Welles went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI.


Flynn was 2-for-2 with a run scored, and an RBI, while Mapes was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Robinson went 1-for-4 with 2-RBI, and a run scored, Orlandini was 1-for-3 with 3-RBI, and a run scored, Davidson went 1-for-3 with a run scored, and an RBI, and Chapman went 1-for-2 with two runs. Ayotte also scored a run.


Welles went the first two innings, with two strikeouts and four walks. Orlandini pitched a batter, followed by Ayotte, who went an inning with one strikeout, two walks, one hit, and three earned runs.


Grazul went an inning, with three strikeouts, and one walk. Robinson pitched the final inning, with one strikeout.


In the 5-4 win over the CT Fury Mapes went 2-for-3 with a double, and 2-RBI, while Orlandini was 1-for-3 with two run scored. Robinson, Grazul, and Green all scored, while Flynn and Welles each had an RBI.


Green went the first two-thirds, striking out one with one run and two walks. Davidson pitched the next 2 1/3-innings, with one strikeout, two hits, four walks, and two unearned runs. Flynn went the final three innings, with five strikeouts, three walks, and one unearned run.


In the second win over the New England Ravens, Susquehanna broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the bottom of the sixth.


Grazul went 3-for-3 with two doubles, and two runs scored, while Green went 1-for-2 with a triple, and a run scored, plus an RBI.


Flynn was 1-for-3 with an RBI, Welles was 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Chapman went 1-for-2. Davidson also had an RBI.


Grazul went the first five innings, striking out eight with two walks, three hits, and three unearned runs. Flynn pitched the final two innings, with three strikeouts, and one walk.


In the final Green went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a run scored, and an RBI, while Mapes was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Chapman went 2-for-2 a triple, a run scored, and an RBI, with Davidson going 2-for-3 with a run scored, and an RBI.


Robinson was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Grazul went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Flynn went 1-for-2 with 3-RBI, and a run scored, Welles went 1-for-4 with a run scored, while Ayotte had an RBI, and Orlandini crossed home twice.


Grazul went the first inning, allowing one hit. Welles pitched the next three innings, striking out four with three hits, and two unearned runs. Flynn pitched the final three innings, with eight strikeouts, three walks, one hit, and one earned run.
