NTL FOOTBALL: TOWANDA HITS THE ROAD AS THEY TRAVEL TO NORTHWEST (2022-09-09)

BY CHRIS MANNING
Northern Tier Sports Report
Towanda (1-1) learned some things about themselves in their loss this past week against Milton - some of them good, and some things they need to work on.

They’ll be putting those lessons to the test as they travel to Northwest (2-0) on Saturday with a 7 p.m. start.

“Northwest is a very balanced team with some weapons on offense,” said coach Craig Dawsey. “We have to be able to contain them as much as possible.”

The Rangers have scored 113 points so far this season in wins over CV (51-19) and CMVT (62-14). They’re led by a passing attack that averages 244 yards per game this season.

“We need to keep stressing the fundamentals in order to compete,” remarked Dawsey. “This will be a good test for us as we will have to respond to our game last week. There were many positive things we did this past Friday night, but we became inconsistent in the second half, and we have to learn to finish in all four quarters consistently.”

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Quinton Woodburn, Towanda, WR, DB - Woodburn will likely be a busy man on Saturday if Northwest continues their passing attack. He has Towanda’s lone interception on the season, to go with eight tackles, so his play on that end will be key in slowing down the Rangers.

Carter Hontz, Northwest, QB - Hontz’s QBR coming into the game is 129.5, averaging over 220 yards passing with eight touchdowns to one pick. He also has three rushing touchdowns on the year on just 10 carries, showing he has a nose for the end zone. Containing him will be key for Towanda.

KEYS TO THE GAME

Towanda - Play physical. It’s the same as last week, if Towanda’s physical they can dominate the line of scrimmage, and get the Northwest offense off track. The Rangers have been very balanced this year - 54 runs, 49 passes - so the Knights will have to slow up their offensive momentum.

Northwest - Slow Towanda’s run game. If the Knights can back to running the ball like they did against North Penn, their offense will be their best defense against Northwest. Limiting the Rangers’ opportunities will go a long ways to keeping their offense in check.
