THE WEEK AHEAD: THE CALENDAR TURNS TO OCTOBER AS THE SEASONS HEAT UP (2022-10-02)

Northern Tier Sports Report
The calendar turns to October, and that means teams are completely in the second half of their seasons. Football and volleyball have four weeks left in the regular season, soccer has three, and cross-country two.

FOOTBALL

Friday, October 7

Towanda (2-4) at Troy (6-0), 7 p.m.: The Knights are battling for a playoff spot, while the Trojans are in the top two of the district standings for Class AA. Towanda is coming off a loss to Athens, while the Trojans recently defeated Wellsboro on the road.

Montgomery (1-5) at Canton (6-0), 7 p.m.: It’s homecoming for the Warriors as they welcome the Red Raiders. Canton hasn’t played a close game since week one, while Montgomery is riding a two game losing streak.

Wyalusing (2-4) at Wellsboro (0-6), 7 p.m.: Despite having two more wins than the Hornets, Wyalusing is behind them in the playoff race. A win out at Wellsboro would move them up the standings.

BOYS’ SOCCER

NEB (5-6) at Wellsboro (9-2), 5:30 p.m.: The Panthers gave the NTL leading Hornets a battle last week, leading them 2-0 at the half before falling 4-2. NEB would like to break the four match losing streak they’re currently riding.

Athens (8-5-1) at Troy (1-11), 4 p.m.: The Wildcats won their first match-up 6-0 up in the valley, as the Trojans look to build some late season momentum.

NPL (3-10) at Towanda (1-11), 6 p.m.: The Knights lost to NPL 8-2 in their second game of the year, but led them 2-1 in the second half.

Friday, October 7

Sullivan County (5-3) at NEB (5-6), 4 p.m.: Sullivan’s busy week continues with their third match in four days. The Griffins won their first meeting down in Laporte.

Saturday, October 8

Hughesville (5-7-1) at Troy (1-11), 11 a.m.: A non-league game for Troy for their third match of the week. Both teams have wins over NPL this season.

VOLLEYBALL

Tuesday, October 4

Troy (5-5) at Williamsport (5-4), 7 p.m.: The Trojans are riding off their exciting win over Towanda to end last week, but start a busy week on the road against an improved Millionaires squad.

Athens (4-5) at Towanda (3-7), 7:15 p.m.: The Knights have lost some close ones recently, and have another tough opponent in Athens.

Canton (9-1) at Williamson (7-3), 7:15 p.m.: A match-up of two of the top teams in the league. Williamson just saw their 7-match win streak get snapped at Williamsport, while Canton continues to roll through the NTL Small School.

Wyalusing (7-4) at NEB (4-5), 7:15 p.m.: The Rams are looking to put their loss to NPL behind them, while the Panthers will start their playoff push this week.

Thursday, October 6

Towanda (3-7) at Williamsport (5-4), 7 p.m.: The Knights will hit the road for this non-league match agains the Millionaires.

NPL (9-1) at NEB (4-5), 7:15 p.m.: The Panthers welcome NTL leading NPL for this cross-over match.

Troy (5-5) at Canton (9-1), 7:15 p.m.: Canton hosts this rivalry match as both teams are battling for playoff positioning.

NEB (4-5) at Wyalusing (7-4), 11:30 a.m.: Part of a tri-match with Loyalsock, the two will be meeting for the second time this week.

NEB (4-5) vs Loyalsock (4-5) at Wyalusing, 1:30 p.m.: The Panthers will take on an improved Lancers squad as part of a double-header.

Loyalsock (4-5) at Wyalusing (7-4), 3 p.m.: The Ram will get their shot at Loyalsock as they inch closer to clinching a district spot.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Wednesday, October 5

Williamson (6-4-1) at Troy (9-2), 4 p.m.: These two teams haven’t played each other yet, though the Trojans are rolling after their win over NEB last week to take control of the NTL standings.

Wyalusing (8-5) at Towanda (2-8-2), 5 p.m.: The Rams have hit a bit of a skid, and will look to finish the season strong in order to move up in the playoff standings. The Knights are coming off a win over NPM as they get their rivals at home.

Thursday, October 6

NEB (8-3) at Sullivan County (3-6), 4 p.m.: The Panthers hit the road for this back to back non-league contest. They beat the Griffins down in Laporte a year ago.

Saturday, October 8

Wyalusing (8-5) at Wellsboro (5-6), 10 a.m.: A big match-up in terms of the postseason. The Hornets likely need a win here to keep their playoff hopes alive, and Wellsboro will need a win to keep from sliding too far down the district standings.

Troy (9-2) at Towanda (2-8-2), 10 a.m.: The Knights welcome Troy for their second match-up of the season. The Trojans won the first at home, though Towanda was shorthanded for that match.

Williamson (6-4-1) at NEB (8-3), 3 p.m.: It took overtime to decide the first match between the two teams, so expect this one to be just as tight.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Tuesday, October 4

Canton, Towanda at Sullivan County, 4:30 p.m.: The Knights and Warriors head down to Laporte and their hilly course for this week four NTL dual meet.

Wellsboro, Wyalusing at Athens, 4:30 p.m.: A large school match-up - for the most part - but watch the Wyalusing-Athens girls dual. The Rams fended off a tough Troy challenge last week, a team Athens defeated two weeks ago.

NPM, Troy at NEB, 4:30 p.m.: Both Panther squads are rolling right now after their performances at McQuaid. The Troy boys are a little bit of a sleeper after beating Wyalusing last week, so the NEB-Troy dual could be tight.

GIRLS’ TENNIS
