The Sports Reports
Horseheads senior Emily Huntley won a state silver medal, and Elmira junior Alex Smith played a key role in helping the Elmira boys to a state title — the Express’ first-ever in any sport — over the weekend at the New York State Bowling championships. They are The Sports Reports / Ziff Law Firm Regional “Athletes of the Week,” for the week ending March 12.

HORSEHEADS’ HUNTLEY NAMED ZIFF LAW FIRM GIRLS REGIONAL “ATHLETE OF THE WEEK”
Huntley finished second in the state in the composite competition Saturday, rolling a six-game set of 1,326 — an average of 221.0.

Huntley shot 206, 214, 266, 189, 237 and 214 to average 221 on the day. Her first three game series was 686 and her next three games was 640.  Huntley’s 266 was also the second best game on the day at states.

Huntley’s 1,326 was the 14th best series of the weekend, that includes all bowlers — boys and girls, between Division 1 and Division 2 in the team and individual competitions.

ELMIRA’S SMITH NAMED ZIFF LAW FIRM BOYS REGIONAL “ATHLETE OF THE WEEK”
Smith helped Elmira win the first team state title in any sport in Elmira Express history as they shot 6,314 to win states by 51 pins.

Smith was the second overall finisher on the day shooting 1,345, just 40 pins behind the winning individual score on the day.
