NTL WRESTLING: REBUILDING WYALUSING PUTS TOGETHER STRONG SEASON ON THE MAT (2023-03-15)

It was a rebuilding year for Wyalusing wrestling, but one that saw them improve as the season went on. They were one of the youngest teams in the league, but ended up with the most state qualifiers from the NTL.

“We knew it was going to be a rebuilding year,” said Ram coach Michael Earle. “We only had six returning starters from last year, and started the year with five freshmen, and a sophomore new to the sport. Our returners did a really nice job setting the tone in the wrestling room of the work ethic in practices that our program expects, and the freshmen coming up were well prepared to make the jump to varsity.”

Wyalusing went 12-8 on the year, qualifying for the District IV Duals Championships. They got wins over Troy, Athens, and NP-Liberty during the dual meet season, and, even though they lost to Towanda twice, they cut the deficit in half the second time they faced them.

Individually, freshman Patrick Cole (114, 36-13) was a regional runner-up and state qualifier, while Ayden Hunsinger (152, 37-11) also made states, going 1-2.

C.J. Carr (121, 37-9) came up just short of the state tournament in a tough regional bracket, while Isaiah Harvey (23-10), Jonathan Earle (20-18), Cade McMicken (23-13), and Alex Hunsinger (21-17) all finished with winning records.

“All in all, we were pleased with having another winning season, and qualifying two individuals, Ayden Hunsinger, and Cole Patrick, to the state tournament,” said Earle. “It was also nice to see CJ Carr earn a sectional championship after finishing runner-up the previous two years.”

They lose just three seniors and bring back six wrestlers who finished .500 or better on the season. They also have two wrestlers - Zachary Fenton (12-16) and Ethan Vanderpool (10-13) - who went just under .500 coming back, so the seeds are there to build upon for next year.

“We are excited about doing some work in the off-season, and will have higher goals and expectations for next season,” remarked Earle.
