LITTLE LEAGUE: RTL COMES UP SHORT IN HEARTBREAKER TO WELLSBORO (2023-07-10)

ATHENS — RTL Minors All-star baseball lost a heartbreaker to Wellsboro, 7-6, during the District 15 finale on Monday.

RTL comes in second for the year while Wellsboro takes the team title.

Wellsboro led by as much as 4-1 after three innings, but RTL cut it to 4-2 after the fourth.

A 3-run top fifth put Wellsboro up 7-2, and it looked like they might run away with it, but RTL came back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to get back in the game.

In the sixth they added a run early, then loaded the bases with two outs. A single by Noah Shaffer appeared to tie up the game, but an RTL runner was called out on offensive interference, negating the tying run, and ending the game.

RTL out hit Wellsboro 16-9 as Noah Shaffer (3-for-4) had a double with 3-RBI, and a run scored, while Ethan Shaffer (3-for-4) scored a run.

Aiden Nystrand (2-for-3) had a double with a run scored, and an RBI, as Jackson Case (1-for-3) had a double with an RBI.

Sawyer Clouse (2-for-3) scored, and drove in a run, as Emerson Clouse (2-for-3) also scored. 

Parker Sands (1-for-3) scored, and had an RBI, Elliot Campbell (1-for-3) scored, while Nolan Putnam (1-for-2) also had a hit. 

Ryan Greninger didn’t record a hit, but did drew three walks on all three of his at bats.

Sands started, and went 3 2/3-innings with nine strikeouts. Sawyer Clouse went the next two-thirds innings with two strikeouts, while Nystrand pitched an inning with three strikeouts.

Ethan Shaffer went the final two-thirds with one strikeout.
