Canton’s Parker Hoover has been taking the wrestling mat by storm this summer, claiming a National Title - not bad for somebody who just wanted to follow in her brother’s footsteps.

“Kolton did it, so I wanted to try it out,” said Hoover.

Despite the age, and size difference, she’s not afraid to take on her brother.

“He’s older and 20 pounds heavier, but we wrestle in our living room at home,” Hoover said. “Having him to practice with at home makes me tougher.”

Hoover enjoys a good challenge, one of her favorite parts of wrestling.

“The really hard matches make you better,” she said.

She practices three times a week during the off-season, and 3-4 times in season, along with staying active and eating a healthy diet. Hoover hopes that will be the key to a few more gold medals.

“I want to be a PJW and Keystone State Champion, along with being a MAWA Champion,” said Hoover.

Ultimately, she wants to wrestle in college.

As for right now, Hoover is enjoying the success she’s had so far.

“It feels good,” remarks Hoover. “It gives me a reason to keep going.”

The soon to be fourth grader is also coming along when the sport is about to join the pantheon of PIAA athletics this coming season.

“It’s exciting being a part of a growing sport.”
