NTL FOOTBALL: CANTON HITS THE ROAD TO MONTGOMERY (2023-10-06)
BY CHRIS MANNINGNorthern Tier Sports ReportCanton (6-0) will have a Saturday afternoon game as they travel to Montgomery (1-5) this weekend for a 1 p.m. start.
The Warriors are coming off a 47-14 win over Wyalusing as they keep chugging along despite taking some injuries.
“I’m proud of the way our younger guys have stepped up and filled din with some key players out with injuries,” said Canton coach Tyler Sechrist.
The Red Raiders are coming off their first win of the season, 6-0 over Northwest.
“Montgomery has a young team that plays hard, and they are very physical,” Sechrist said. “We need to stay disciplined on defense, and tackle low.”
The veteran coach is hoping his offense will play clean this week.
“On offense we need to avoid penalties, and play fast and physical,” he said.
KEYS TO THE GAME
Canton - Get off the bus. They saw what happened last week why Wyalusing started slow, and this time the Warriors will be taking the long bus trip. Combined with being a Saturday day game, plus the dreary weather, could be ingredients for a slow start.
Montgomery - Keep the Canton athletes contained. Easier said than done, but the Warriors have one of the best big play offenses in the district, and if they don’t want to be run off the field they’ll need to force Canton to drive the ball.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Briar Persing, Montgomery, RB - Persing led the team in running last week with 53 yards on 20 carries. Canton will need to limit him on the ground in order to force 3-and-outs.
Holden Ward, Canton, WR, DB - Ward has been banged up early this season but had a 38-yard touchdown run last week. Defensively he’s one of the best ball hawks the team has, and is a stalwart 2-way player for the Warriors.
