NTL FOOTBALL: CANTON FALLS TO MILTON IN DEFENSIVE BATTLE (2023-10-21)

MILTON — Canton lost a defensive battle to Milton, 14-7, during non-league football action Friday.

The Warriors held the vaunted Milton running game to just 112 yards, but Milton quarterback Cale Bastian was 11-for-19 for 186 yards, while running 10 times for 37 yards and a score.

Michael Davis led Canton with 62 yards on 13 carries, while Holden Ward had 13 carries for 32 yards and a touchdown. 

Ben Fitch was 6-for-11 for 92 yards through the air, as Zach Colton had two catches for 45 yards. 

Milton struck first at the 5:45 mark of the first quarter on a Bastian 8-yard run. Mackenzie Lopez added the point after for the 7-0 lead.

The game stayed like that until early in the fourth when Chris Doyle ran one in from 6-yards out. Lopez’s kick was good for a 14-0 Milton advantage.

Holden Ward got Canton on the scoreboard with a 4-yard run with 4:38 to play. Alexis McRoberts’ kick was good, making it a one score game, but that’s as close as Canton got.

The Warriors held Doyle to just 36 yards on 14 carries, and didn’t have a turnover in the contest.

Canton also had more first downs than Milton, 12-11, and less penalty yards (6-for-33 compared to 7-for-60), but were out gained 298-200 in total yards.

The Warriors will host Troy next Friday for the Old Shoe, with the NTL title also on the line.
