THE WEEK AHEAD: THE FIRST FULL WEEK OF WINTER SPORTS FEATURES SOME STRONG EARLY SEASON MATCH-UP (2023-12-03)

Northern Tier Sports Report
The first full week of winter sports is upon us with some big contests right off the bat.

WRESTLING

Tuesday, December 5

Blue Ridge at NEB, 7 p.m.: The Panthers open the season with a non-league match against the Raiders. Blue Ridge is one of the better programs out of District II.


Wednesday, December 6

Troy at Towanda, 7 p.m.: The Knights are going for their 900th win in program history as they host the Trojans. Towanda pulled out the dual meet win at the Commons Building last year.


Wyalusing at Wellsboro, 7 p.m.: The Rams hit the road for their opening as they face a revamped Hornets squad.


Thursday, December 7

Athens at NEB, 7 p.m.: The Panthers play host to the Wildcats as part of their home heavy early schedule. There will be an exhibition girls’ match before the boys, featuring both schools’ girls squads.


Friday, December 8

Troy at DKI: The Trojans head down for the early rounds of the Darren Klingerman Invitational.


Saturday, December 9

Wyalusing hosts Gary Woodruff Duals, 9 a.m.: The Rams home opener will be their annual duals tournament, which features several teams out of District IV and District II.


Troy at DKI: The Trojans return to Bloomsburg to finish up the invitational.


GIRLS BASKETBALL

Tuesday, December 5

Sayre (0-2) at Towanda (0-1), 6 p.m.: The Knights will be looking to rebound after a tough loss at Loyalsock to open the season. The Redskins dropped two games at the Susquehanna-Bradford County Challenge over the weekend.


Canton (1-1) at Wyalusing (1-1), 7 p.m.: Both teams split their weekend games, with the Warriors falling to NPL but beating Addison. Wyalusing dropped their opener to Blue Ridge, but turned around and beat Susquehanna.


NEB (0-0) at Troy (0-0), 7 p.m.: The season opener for both teams, who are the favorites to win the two NTL titles. The two teams played two good games last year.


Thursday, December 7

Canton (1-1) at Troy (0-0), 7 p.m.: The Warriors’ road trip continues with their fourth away game to start the year. Troy had to rally to beat Canton early in the second last year.


NEB (0-0) at Williamson (0-0), 7 p.m.: The Panthers’ early season road trip continues as they take on the Warriors. It will be Williamson’s second home contest of the week after hosting NPL on Tuesday.


NPL (2-0) at Wyalusing (1-1), 7 p.m.: The Mounties won their opening season tournament title this past weekend but hit the road for back to back games. After traveling to Williamson Tuesday they take the long trip to Wyalusing, who is coming off a 1-1 performance this past weekend.


Elk Lake at Towanda (0-1), 7 p.m.: Another non-league contest for the Knights as they take on a tough District II opponent, Elk Lake.


Saturday, December 9

Wyalusing (1-1) at Elk Lake, 1:30 p.m.: Elk Lake’s second NTL opponent of the week as the Rams finish the week with another road game in Susquehanna County.


BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Monday, December 4

Towanda at Notre Dame (1-0), 7 p.m.: The Knights open the season on the road against IAC power Notre Dame. They opened the season with a win over Odessa-Montour.


Canton (0-0) at Millville (0-0), 7 p.m.: The season opener for both teams. The Warriors defeated Millville last year at home.


Wednesday, December 6

Towanda (0-0) at Sayre (1-1), 7 p.m.: The Redskins opened the season with a loss to Blue Ridge then followed that up with a win over Susquehanna. This is part of the Knights’ road heavy early schedule.


Troy (0-0) at NEB (0-0), 7 p.m.: The first game for both teams. The two squads are the favorites to claim the two division titles in the NTL this year,


Wyalusing (0-2) at Canton (0-0), 7 p.m.: The Warriors’ home opener as they take on a Wyalusing team that suffered two tough losses to start the season.


Friday, December 8

Troy vs Muncy at Sullivan County Tournament, 6 p.m.: Two defending district champions face-off in the opening round of the Sullivan Tournament. Troy won the Class AAA title last year with Muncy taking the Class AA title.


NEB at Montgomery Tournament: The Panthers head down to Montgomery as they look to start the season off strong.


Saturday, December 9

Troy at Sullivan County Tournament: The Trojans will finish up play at Laporte.


NEB at Montgomery Tournament: The Panthers will finish up play at Montgomery.
