ELMIRA, N.Y. — A late Towanda rally came up just short in their season opener to Notre Dame, falling 65-61 in non-league boys’ basketball action Monday.

The Knights were down 11 going into the final frame, but hit five 3-balls to make it close. They had had more 3-pointers (11) than 2-point field goals (nine) on the day.

Teagan Irish led the way with 21 points, including four 3-pointers, while Bayley Poll netted 10 points, with three 3-balls.

Gianni Assante-DiCupillo also had 10 points, with Darrius Farrell and Ben Shrawder scoring seven points apiece. Connor Barnes netted four, and Markell Gardner finished with two.

Notre Dame’s Jeremiah Parker led all scorers with 33 points.

The Crusaders jumped out to a 7-0 first quarter lead but Towanda rallied, cutting it to 12-9 at the first horn.

The Knights went on to out score Notre Dame, 20-19, in the second quarter behind six points from Irish for a 31-29 halftime score in favor of the Crusaders.

Notre Dame’s defense clamped down in the third, holding Towanda to 10 points, while Parker went off for nine points to push the Crusaders’ lead to 50-39 going into the fourth quarter.

Irish exploded for three 3-balls to lead the Towanda rally, while Poll and Assante-DiCupillo also hit long balls.

Parker, though, carried Notre Dame across the finish line, scoring eight points in the frame.

Towanda (0-1) will travel to Sayre (1-1) on Wednesday.
