NTL BOYS' BASKETBALL: NEB USES LATE PUSH TO PULL AWAY FROM MONTROSE (2023-12-18)

ROME — NEB used a dominant second half to top Montrose, 52-40, during non-league boys’ basketball action Monday.

The Panthers were down 26-23 at halftime, but out scored the Meteors 29-14 in the second half to pull away for the win.


Dillon Donnelly had a big day, going 6-for-8 from 3-point range for 19 points, while also getting two steals.


Cayden McPherson was 5-for-10 for 10 points and five boards, with Cooper Brown adding seven points, nine rebounds, and two steals.


Josh Stanton had six points, five assists, three boards, and two steals, while Eli Stanton added five points and four steals.


Brayden Miller chipped in with three points as Drew Beers had two points, three assists, and three steals.


All in all, the Panthers had 14 steals on the day.


Jack Russell led Montrose with 17 points.


NEB held an early 13-12 lead on the back of their outside shooting as Donnelly had two 3-balls, while Eli Stanton added one.


Russell went off for Montrose in the second quarter, scoring 10 points to lead them to the 3-point lead going into the locker rooms.


The Panthers responded with a 16-point third quarter as Donnelly hit 3-pointers four and five in the game, while Brown and McPherson had four points each, giving NEB a 39-36 lead going into the final frame.


In the fourth they held Montrose to just one field goal and two points, while Josh Stanton led NEB with four points. Donnelly and Miller added two 3-pointers, and the Panthers collected their fifth win in a row.


Montrose won the JV game 40-31 with Tyler Thoman leading NEB with 11 points.


Northeast (5-1) will travel to Sayre (3-3) for a big NTL Small School match-up.
