NTL BOYS' BASKETBALL: NEB HOLDS ON TO BEAT TOWANDA (2024-01-27)
Northern Tier Sports ReportROME — NEB held on to beat Towanda, 37-35, in a defensive battle for an NTL boys’ basketball win Saturday.
Neither team shot well from the field and combined for only 11 points in the fourth quarter, but, with the win, the Panthers remain on top of the NTL, Division-II standings and continue to battle for the top spot in the District IV, Class AA standings.
Drew Beers had 12 points and seven boards for NEB, with Cayden McPherson scoring eight points on 3-for-3 shooting from inside the arc. He had five boards and four assists.
Josh Stanton had six points, six rebounds, and five assists, while Cooper Brown finished with six points and eight boards.
Dillon Donnelly chipped in with three points, as will Herb scored two.
Teagan Irish led Towanda with 11 points, while Darrius Farrell netted eight. Bayley Poll scored six, Markel Garner and Connor Barnes had four points apiece, with Kole Heyer netting two.
It was tight throughout as NEB took an 11-7 first quarter lead behind four points from Beers and Brown.
The Knights would out score NEB 11-10 in the second quarter as Poll and Farrell hit 3-balls to cut it to 21-18 at the half.
A 12-10 third quarter in favor of Towanda made it a 1-point game going into the fourth. Irish had five points for the Knights, while Beers hit two 3-pointers for NEB.
In the final frame NEB out scored Towanda 6-5, behind four points from McPherson. Towanda had two chances late in the quarter to tie or take the lead but came up empty both possessions.
NEB won the JV game, 45-13, behind 17 points from Tyler Thoman.
NEB (13-2) will host Sayre on Tuesday in another key league match-up, while Towanda (4-12) is at Wellsboro on Tuesday.
