NTL BASEBALL: CANTON FALLS TO MILLVILLE IN EXTRA INNINGS WALK-OFF (2024-04-15)

MILLVILLE — For the second straight game Canton baseball lost in a walk-off, this time in eight innings, to Millville, 8-7, in non-league acton Monday.

The Warriors led 2-1 after the first, with the Quaker tying it up in the fourth. Canton retook the lead with a run in the top of the fifth, but Millville rattled off four in the bottom half to go up 6-3.


Canton rallied, scoring two runs in the sixth, and another in the seventh to force extra innings. The Warriors would take a 7-6 lead in the top of the seventh, but Millville came back with two runs in the bottom half to get the win.


Canton out hit Millville, 9-8, led by Ben Fitch (3-for-4) with a double, a triple, two runs scored, and an RBI. 


Hudson Ward (2-for-4) had a double with two runs scored, and an RBI, as Cohen Landis (2-for-4) had a double and scored a run.


Jason Mahosky (1-for-4) and Bailey Gardner (1-for-5) both drove in a run as Mason Harold scored and had an RBI. Michael Beers and Zach Colton both drove in a run, with Holden Ward drawing four walks and scoring once.


It was pitching by committee for Canton as they had five different guys take the mound.


Harold got the start, going 2 2/3-innings with four hits, no strikeouts, and two earned runs, throwing 57 pitches. Tommy Preston came on for 1 1/3-innings with three strikeouts and one hit, tossing 22 pitches.


Hudson Ward went 2 2/3-innings with three strikeouts, five walks, four runs - all unearned - and two hits on 56 pitches.


Colton pitched an inning with one strikeout, one hit, two walks, and two earned runs, while Gardner came on but didn’t record an out, issuing a walk.


Evan Brokenshire did the lion’s share of pitching for Millville, going the first 6 1/3-innings with three strikeouts, four walks, six hits, and four earned runs.


In the first Holden Ward walked, then moved to third on Hudson Ward’s double. Holden Ward would score on a Colton ground out two batters later, followed by Fitch driving in Hudson Ward for a 2-0 lead.


Millville got one back in the bottom half of the inning, then tied it up in the fourth.


In the top of the fifth Landis led off with a single, then scored on a Hudson Ward two batters later to put Canton back on top.


Then came Millville’s big innings, which used three walks, an error, a double, and a single to bel tout four runs to take the lead.


Canton got back into it in the sixth as Fitch led off with a double. After a Beers walk Fitch scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Harold. 


Mahosky then singled in Harold to cut it to 6-5. The Warriors would load the bases with two outs in the inning, but Millville got out of it with a ground out.


In the seventh Fitch hit a 1-out triple, then scored on a Beers sacrifice fly to knot the game up at 6-6.


Canton would take the lead with two outs in the eighth Gardner singled in Holden Ward to put the Warriors up 7-6.


In the bottom half of the eighth Canton got the first out but after a walk a Millville double tied the game up.


Canton got another out, but a hit by pitch, followed by a walk loaded the bases. Another hit by pitch brought in the winning run.


Canton (6-3) will travel to Troy on Tuesday.
