NTL SOFTBALL: NEB FALLS TO ATHENS (2024-04-17)

ATHENS — NEB suffered their first loss of the season, falling 11-1 to Athens in five innings during NTL softball action Tuesday.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second with NEB cutting it to 2-1 midway through the fourth. That’s when the wheels came off, with Athens scoring four in the bottom half of the inning, then adding five more in the fifth to get the win.

Melanie Shumway (1-for-2) and Hannah Berger (1-for-2) had the two Panther hits, with Shumway scoring the run.

Makenna Callear got the start and took the loss, going three innings with no strikeouts, six hits, one walk, and two runs.

Kelsea Moore came on for the next 1 1/3-innings, with one strikeout, one walk, eight hits, and nine runs.

Savannah Persun got the win for Athens, striking out seven with no walks and two hits.

Ashlyn VanFleet (2-for-2) had a home run and a double with 2-RBI for the Wildcats.

For their lone run Shumway hit a 1-out single, then took third on a 2-out double from Berger. An error off the bat of Moore allowed Shumway to score.

NEB (4-1) will host Wyalusing Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
