NTL BASEBALL: WIGGINS LEADS NEB PAST ATHENS (2024-04-17)

ATHENS — NEB’s Clay Wiggins pitched a gem and his teammates gave him some run support as the Panthers defeated Athens, 5-1, during NTL baseball action Tuesday.

Wiggins went five innings to get the win, striking out eight with one walk, two hits, and one unearned run all on 77 pitches. Kohen Hugo went the final two innings with three strikeouts, one hit, and no walks.


The Panthers used two runs in the second to take the lead, then added another in the third. Athens cut it to 4-1 in the fourth, but two more runs in the fifth saw NEB extend their lead.


Dillon Donnelly (1-for-3) had a double with two runs scored as Hugo (1-for-3) had 2-RBI while scoring a run.


Andrew Beers (1-for-3) had an RBI with Eli Stanton (1-for-3) scoring. Josh Stanton (1-for-4) had a hit as Gavin Puza scored a run, and Ethan Hunsinger drove one in.


In the second Hugo reached on a 1-out error followed by Puza drawing a walk. Beers would bring in Hugo with a hit for the 1-0 lead.


Hunsinger then got in Puza with a ground out to make it 2-0.


In the third Donnelly reached after getting beaned, followed by Josh Stanton hitting a single. After an out Wiggins got hit to load the bases.


Donnelly then stole home for the 3-0 lead.


In the fifth Eli Stanton led off with a bunt single followed by Donnelly hitting a double. Athens would get the next two batters out, followed by an intentional walk to Wiggins to load things up.


Hugo, though, did a job, driving in Eli Stanton and Donnelly with a single to extend NEB’s lead to 5-1.


Northeast (5-1) will host Towanda on Wednesday.
