NTL SOFTBALL: WYALUSING WINS IN 9TH INNING WALK-OFF OVER WILLIAMSON (2024-04-17)

Northern Tier Sports Report
WYALUSING — It was an old fashion thriller down in Wyalusing as the Rams pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth to beat Williamson, 6-5, in NTL softball action Tuesday.

Wyalusing led 3-0 after three but saw Williamson come back with two in the fourth. The Rams extended their lead to 4-2 in the fifth, but the Warriors cut it to 4-3 in the sixth. They would take a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh only for the Rams rally and knot the game up to send it into extras.

In the bottom of the ninth Rachel Wilson led off with a hit, then took second on a passed ball. She would take third, then scored on a Treanna Nickeson bunt to get the win.

“I wanted to play for that one run because I thought that’s all we were going to need, and then we had a little rough inning there where we give up two instead of one,” explained Wyalusing coach Brett Jayne. “Then we had to play catch up, and it worked out for the girls, it was as good win for them. They buckled down. Hats off to Williamson, Williamson played a good game.”

Nickeson (2-for-3) scored twice and had an RBI while Kylie Pickett (2-for-3) hit a double with 2-RBI. Addisyn Bly (1-for-3) crossed home twice with Addison Fluck (1-for-3), Allie Liddick (1-for-4), and Josie Ferris (1-for-3) also getting hits. Wilson (1-for-2) had an RBI to go with the game winning run.

Kya Carpenter added an RBI as Raelea Harvey scored.

Pickett started, and went 3 2/3-innings with one strikeout, five walks, one hit, and two runs. Fluck went the final 5 1/3-innings to get the win, striking out seven with three walks, three hits, and three runs, one of which was earned.

In the second Liddick reached on an error, then her courtesy runner Harvey scored on an error off the bat of Wilson for the 1-0 lead.

Nickeson led off the third with a hit, followed by Bly reaching on an error. Pickett would drive in Nickeson with a sacrifice fly, then Carpenter brought in Bly with a sacrifice bunt to make it 3-0.

In the fifth Bly led off with a hit then scored on a Pickett hit to make it 4-2.

After the Williamson rally Nickeson drew a 1-out walk in the seventh, then tied the game up by taking home on a passed ball. That set up the heroics in the eighth.

“I think it’s going to be a big shot in the arm for them,” Jayne said about the walk-off win. “The girls have worked extremely hard. I don’t know if anybody realizes but we’re extremely young. This is my seventh year here and I planned on rebuilding this year, and with the way the girls are playing, I think that they can play with anybody on any given day. I think this is a good confidence booster for them.”

Wyalusing (2-4) will travel to NEB on Wednesday with a 4:30 p.m. start.
