NTL SOFTBALL: WYALUSING RALLIES PAST NEB (2024-04-17)

Northern Tier Sports Report
ROME — Wyalusing rallied from a 5-1 deficit to top NEB, 9-6, in NTL softball action Wednesday. The Rams scored nine of their 10 runs in the final three innings to pull ahead for the win.

“I think the girls settled down, started relaxing in the box, and put together some nice, quality hits,” said Wyalusing coach Brett Jayne. “That’s what I think was the turnaround. I don’t know why they were a little flustered, or what it was, but when they finally got it straightened out they put the ball in play nice.”

Addisyn Bly (3-for-4) had a day, with a home run, two doubles, 4-RBI, and three runs scored, while Danielle Wilson (3-for-4) had a double with two runs scored.

Treanna Nickeson (2-for-4) scored twice, with Grace Burridge (1-for-1) getting a pinch hit double and driving in a run. Addison Fluck (1-for-3) drove in a run, along with Rachel Wilson, who also crossed home. Kya Carpenter scored a run, too.

Kylie Pickett got the start, and went the first two innings with three hits, three runs, and one walk.

Fluck went the final five to get the win, striking out four with three hits, three walks, and three runs.

For the Panthers it’s the second straight game where they had a late innings let down, falling to Athens Tuesday night.

“I definitely think the three games in a row without having any out door practice in two weeks has hurt us,” said NEB coach MaKaylah Leljedal. “But it’s not an excuse. The girls still had a few errors, but, overall, I’m really proud of how they played tonight. I don’t think the score really represents how well they were doing.”

Melanie Shumway (2-for-4) scored twice with Kelsea Moore (1-for-2) driving in two runs. Kiarra DeLancey (1-for-4) scored a run with an RBI as Toni Herb (1-for-3) also drove in a run.

Hannah Berger (1-for-3), Ava Lambert, and Jaylin Wheaton all scored while Makenna Callear (1-for-3) had a hit.

Moore took the loss, striking out five with nine hits, five walks, and nine runs scored.

Bly got the Rams on the scoreboard first with a solo home run in the opening inning. NEB would rally with three runs of their own, as Shumway singled, followed by DeLancey reaching on a fielder’s choice.

A Berger hit would load the bases for Moore, who’s sacrifice fly brought in Shumway, while DeLancey scored on the over throw to home.

Herb’s single would bring Berger home for the 3-1 lead.

The Panthers made it 5-1 with two runs in the third as Shumway reached on a hit and scored off a DeLancey single. Moore would later walk with two outs, with Lambert scoring.

The Wyalusing comeback began in the fifth as Nickeson led off with a double, then was doubled in by Bly. Bly later scored on a Rachel Wilson ground out to cut it to 5-3.

The sixth is when the Rams took the lead with Danielle Wilson leading off with a double. She later scored on a Carpenter double.

Nickeson drew a walk, followed by Bly driving her and Carpenter home to go up 6-5. A Fluck ground out later brought in Bly for the 2-run lead.

Wyalusing added two more runs in the seventh as Rachel Wilson led off with a walk, followed by Danielle Wilson reaching on an error two batters later. Both would eventually score to make it a 4-run game.

NEB rallied in the seventh as Wheaton reached on a walk, and came all around to score. Fluck, though, got back to back strikeouts to end the game.

NEB (4-2) will have some practice time before they travel to CV on Friday, while Wyalusing (3-4) has won three of their last four games as they get a day off before going to NP-Liberty on Friday.

“I’m hoping that we can keep the momentum rolling,” Jayne said. “We have to go to North Penn-Liberty on Friday, they’re tough to beat, and they’ll be on their home field, but we’re going to give it everything we got. These girls are a bunch of players.”
