NTL SOFTBALL: TROY FINDS THEIR BATS AS THEY SWEEP WELLSBORO IN DOUBLE-HEADER (2024-04-19)

EAST TROY — Troy softball rebounded from their loss at NP-Liberty on Thursday with a sweep against Wellsboro in NTL double-header action Friday.

The Trojans won the first game 16-1, then pulled out a 24-3 victory in the second game.


GAME 1

Troy jumped out with eight runs in the first, with Wellsboro getting one back in the top of the second. The Trojans scored one in the bottom half of the inning, one more in the third, then pushed six across in the fourth for the mercy rule win.


Lauren Reed (2-for-3) had a home run with 3-RBI and two runs scored, as Lauren Ridall (3-for-4) had a double with three runs scored, and an RBI.


Amber James (2-for-3) had a double with 3-RBI and two runs scored, while Sydnee Bellows (1-for-3) drove in three runs with two runs scored.


Marlee Stanton (1-for-2) scored twice with an RBI as Olivia Champluvier (1-for-3) had a double with a run scored, and an RBI. Kali Ayres scored twice, Madi Palmer scored and drove in a run, and Caitlyn Knapp also crossed home.


Champluvier got the win, striking out seven with one walk, two hits, and one earned run.


Ridall led off the bottom of the first with a hit, then eventually scored on a wild pitch. James, Ayres, and Champluvier drew three straight walks, with Palmer driving in James on a sacrifice fly.


A walk to Knapp loaded the bases, setting up Bellows’ 3-run double that brought in Ayres, Champluvier, and Knapp for a 5-0 lead.


Bellows later scored on a wild pitch, while Stanton would reach on an error. That set up Reed’s 0-1 2-run dinger for the 8-0 lead.


Wellsboro got a home run of their own in the top of the second to make it 8-1. 


Troy’s run in the bottom half of the second came on a Stanton sacrifice fly that brought in Palmer. 


In the third Ridall doubled then scored on a James ground out to make it 10-1.


After getting out of a jam in the top of the fourth Knapp led off the bottom half of the inning with a walk. 


After an out Stanton singled, followed by Reed driving in Bellows with a hit for an 11-1 score. A Ridall hit would bring in Stanton, while James followed that up with a 2-run double that allowed Reed and Ridall to cross home.


A walk to Ayres was followed by a Champluvier 2-run double that ended the game.


GAME 2

In the second game Troy scored in four of the five innings as they pounded out 14 hits. 


They notched six in the first, eight in the second, two in the third, and eight more in the fifth to get the win.


Stanton (3-for-5) had a triple with 4-RBI and three runs scored as Bellows (3-for-4) had a double with 2-RBI and two runs scored.


James (2-for-2) scored three times and drove in three runs as Ridall (1-for-3) had a double with four runs scored, and an RBI. Ayres (1-for-3) had a double with four runs scored, and 2-RBI, with Reed (1-for-2) getting a double with a run scored.


Knapp (1-for-2) scored twice and drove in three runs while Palmer (1-for-5) had 2-RBI with a run scored. 


Maddyson Muir (1-for-1) scored twice with Champluvier and Taylor Brown also crossing home.


Ridall got the win, going four innings with three strikeouts, one walk, three hits, and two runs, one of which was earned. Champluvier pitched the final inning, striking out two with three hits and one unearned run.


In the first Ridall would reach on an error then score on a wild pitch. Palmer would hit a 1-out single to bring in James, followed by Ayres scoring on a Knapp ground out to make it 3-0.


Palmer later scored on a wild pitch, followed by Stanton’s triple driving in Bellows. Reed brought in Stanton with a double for the 6-0 lead.


In the second three straight walks led to Ridall scoring on a wild pitch. After Muir is hit by a pitch Palmer drives in James on a sacrifice fly.


After a walk to Knapp Ayres scored on a wild pitch, followed by Muir scoring on an error. Stanton would drive in Knapp on a fielder’s choice, with Ridall driving in Stanton with a double two batters later.


A James single would score Brown and Ridall to make it 14-0.


In the third Troy’s first two batters reached, with Ayres scoring on a wild pitch. After a second out Stanton singled in Muir for the 16-1 score.


For the fifth Knapp led off with a walk then scored on a Bellows double. Stanton would plate Bellows with a single.


Three straight walks would bring in Stanton and load the bases.


That led to a 2-run hit by Ayres that made it 21-2. After a walk, and an out. Knapp singled in James and Ayres for a 23-2 score. 


Troy’s final run came on a Bellows ground out that scored Champluvier.


Troy (6-1) is at Athens on Tuesday.
