NTL SOFTBALL: CANTON RALLIES PAST WILLIAMSON (2024-04-22)

Northern Tier Sports Report
CANTON — Canton used a late 5-run spurt to top Williamson, 7-4, during NTL softball action Monday, their third win in four games.

“A good come from behind win for us,” said Canton coach Darryl Jannone. “I’m very proud of the girls as the tension was obvious, but they rose to the challenge. (Chelsea) Lehman had a great throw to get the runner out at the plate, and that proved to be the spark to get them fired up. (Tiffany) Acla made an aggressive diving catch to seal the win.”

Addi Pepper (3-for-4) had a double with three runs scored, and an RBI, as Lehman (2-for-3) also drove in three runs.

Acla (2-for-4) had a double with 2-RBI, while Jaylee Ward (1-for-3) scored. Nevaeh Vroman (1-for-4) had a hit with Rylin Graham and Tara Gilbert both crossing home.

Gilbert got the win, going the distance with 10 hits, two walks, four earned runs, and six strikeouts.

Canton opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Lehman singled in Pepper.

Williamson added two runs in the top of the second to take the lead, then scored one more in the third for a 2-run advantage.

In the bottom of the third Adriane Katona drew a lead-off walk with her courtesy runner, Maayke Inman, scoring on a Pepper hit two batters later to cut it to 3-2.

It stayed that way until Canton’s 2-run fifth, which saw them score both runs with two outs. Pepper led off with a double, then scored on a Lehman sacrifice fly.

Gilbert drew a walk to get the rally going again, then scored two batters later on an error off the bat of Vroman to put Canton up 4-3.

They got some separation in the sixth as Ward drew a 1-out walk, followed by Pepper reaching on an error. Graham loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch.

That set up Lehman’s RBI single. Williamson would get a second out but Acla are up with the big hit, a 2-run double to make it 7-3 Canton.

Williamson got one back in the top of the seventh but with two runners on Canton retired three straight batters to get the win.

Canton (4-7) will travel to CV on Tuesday with a 4:30 p.m. start.
