NTL BASEBALL: NEB PULLS OUT WIN OVER SAYRE (2024-04-22)

SAYRE — NEB was able to eke out a 6-4 win over Sayre during NTL baseball action Monday.

The game was back and forth, with Sayre taking a 1-run lead in the first. Both teams scored a run in the third, with the Panthers going up 3-2 thanks to a 2-run fourth.


They extended their lead to 4-2 in the fifth, but saw Sayre cut it to 4-3 in the sixth.


A 2-run top seven gave the Panthers some breathing room. Sayre got one run back in the bottom half of the inning, but couldn’t overcome the deficit.


Clay Wiggins got the win in the circle, going 5 1/3-innings with six strikeouts, five walks, three hits and three unearned runs.


Kohen Hugo got the save, going 1 2/3-innings with one strikeout, no walks, two hits, and one earned run.


Dillon Donnelly (1-for-2) had a double with two runs scored, and an RBI, while Josh Stanton (1-for-4) had a run scored and an RBI.


Hugo (1-for-2) and Cayden McPherson (1-for-4) both drove in runs, as Gavin Puza (1-for-3) and Andrew Beers (1-for-3) both scored.


In the third Donnelly walked, then scored on an error off the bat of Wiggins with 2-outs to tie the game up.


In the fourth Puza led off with a hit, then scored on an error off the bunt of Beers to make it 2-2. Beers later scored on a Donnelly sacrifice fly to put the Panthers up a run.


In the fifth Hugo reached on a 1-out single, with courtesy runner Connor Johnson scoring on a McPherson hit for a 2-run lead.


In the seventh Donnelly led off by reaching on an error, then scored on a Josh Stanton hit. After an out Stanton scored on a Hugo sacrifice fly for the 3-run lead.


NEB (7-3) will travel to Williamson on Tuesday.
