NTL BASEBALL: TAVANI LEADS TOWANDA PAST SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT (2024-04-22)

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT — Towanda got a career night from Jack Tavani on the mound, and used a 4-run first inning to beat South Williamsport, 5-0, during non-league baseball action Monday.

Tavani gave up just three hits and one walk to go with the shutout, while striking out three, on 90 pitches.


At the plate Cameron Fields (2-for-3) had a double and run scored out of the number nine spot with Gianni Assante Di Cupillo (2-for-4) scoring a run and driving one in.


Dawson Butts (2-for-3) scored a run with Tavani (1-for-4) scoring a run and driving one in. Wil Shrawder (1-for-3) had an RBI with Sam Fulmer (1-for-3) getting a hit. Teagan Irish scored, as well.


The Knights scored all four first inning runs with two outs as Assante drove in Irish with a hit. After a Butts walk Tavani singled in Assante for a 2-0 lead.


A Fulmer single allowed Butts to score on an error, then Shrawder drove in Tavani with a hit to make it 4-0.


The Knights kept it scoreless as Shrawder threw out a South runner at home in the bottom half of the inning. Towanda retired 18 of the next 22 batters after that.


Towanda got their other run in the fourth, also with two outs. Fields would single then scored on a throwing error off an Irish steal for the 5-0 lead.


This breaks a 4-game losing streak.


Last Saturday they lost to Montgomery, 8-3, giving up three runs in the first, and fourth in the third. They were down 8-0 at one point but got one back in the fourth, and another two in the seventh.


Jack Wheaton (2-for-4) had a double with a run scored, and an RBI, with Irish (1-for-2) scoring twice. Assante (1-for-4) driving in a run with Shrawder (1-for-3) also getting a hit.


Assante took the loss going four innings with two strikeouts, no walks, eight hits, eight runs, two of which were earned.


Irish went the final three innings with three strikeouts, two walks, three hits, and no runs.


In the fourth Irish and Wheaton had back to back singles, setting up Assante’s hit that scored Irish to get the Knights on the scoreboard.


In the seventh Irish drew a 2-out walk, then scored on a Wheaton double. An error off the bat of Assante allowed Wheaton to score for the 8-3 final.


Towanda (3-7) will host Wyalusing on Wednesday.
