NTL BASEBALL: TROY HOLDS DOWN ATHENS FOR LEAGUE WIN (2024-04-24)

ATHENS — Troy baseball got a big day out of Reed Palmer as they shut down Athens to the tune of 5-1 in NTL baseball action Tuesday.

The Trojans used a 2-run second to get out in front, with both teams scoring a run in the third. They added two more safety runs in the fifth for the 4-run win.


Palmer went 3-for-4 with two runs scored at the plate, then got the save, pitching the final 1 1/3-innings with one strikeout and one walk.


Camryn Harwick got the win, going 5 2/3-innings with nine strikeouts, three walks, three hits, and one unearned run.


Brendan Gilliland (2-for-4) scored twice while Joseph Frye (2-for-4) had a multi-hit game.


Clayton Smith (1-for-4) scored and drove in a run with Jackson Taylor (1-for-4) and Camden Allen (1-for-4) each getting an RBI. Lincoln Chimics (1-for-4) also had a hit.


In the second Palmer had a 1-out single then scored on an error off the bat of Allen. 


Clayton Smith would reach on a fielder’s choice, then scored two batters later on a Taylor single for the 2-0 lead.


In the third Gilliland had a 1-out hit then scored on an error in the outfield on a Chimics fly-out to make it 3-0.


Athens got the run back in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 2-runs again.


In Troy’s 2-run fifth Gilliland led off with a hit, followed by Palmer singling two batters later.


Allen came through with a hit that brought in Gilliland, then Palmer scored on a Smith single for the 5-1 lead.


Athens would load the bases in the bottom of the sixth but Palmer came on to get out of the jam with a strikeout. The Wildcats never seriously threatened in the seventh.


Troy (8-2) will host Wyalusing on Friday.
