NTL BASEBALL: WYALUSING CONTINUES STRONG HITTING STREAK, TOPS TROY 10-3 (2024-04-27)

Northern Tier Sports Report
EAST TROY — For the fourth game in a row Wyalusing baseball reached double digits on the scoreboard, using a 7-run second inning to down Troy, 10-3, giving them their first NTL divisional loss this season.

“When we went down to the Central Columbia tournament last weekend we just hit the cover off the ball,” said Wyalusing coach Nick Vanderpool. “We went 1-1 down there, and jumped out against Towanda. Kenny Mapes started us off with that double, then they had that error there with two outs, and we scored seven runs with two outs, so that was a big one. When we hit like this were tough to beat.”

The Rams pounded out 12 hits on the day while Trehnon Hugo and Hunter House held the hot hitting Trojans to just six in the game. Hugo got the start, and win, going six innings with six strikeouts, four walks, five hits, and two earned runs.

“It’s good that we got up by so much in the game so I could feel calm pitching,” remarked Hugo. “I just know that I have so many runs to work with, that’s it alright if I walk someone.”

House pitched the seventh, striking out one with one walk, one hit, and one earned run.

At the plate Kenny Mapes (3-for-3) had a double with 3-RBI and a run scored as Parker Petlock (3-for-3) scored.

Nick Vanderpool (2-for-4) scored twice with CJ Carr (2-for-5) scoring twice, while driving in two runs.

Hugo (1-for-4) scored twice and had an RBI as Kaeden Kusmierz and Isaac Shaffer both crossed home. House added an RBI while Casey God (1-for-4) had a hit.

Reed Palmer (2-for-4) had two doubles with a run scored and an RBI for the Trojans as Camden Allen (2-for-4) also scored and drove in a run.

Joseph Frye (1-for-2) had an RBI with Clayton Smith (1-for-2) getting a hit. Brendan Gilliland scored a run.

Allen took the loss, going four innings to strikeout three with two walks, eight hits, and eight runs, one of which was earned.

Trey Teribury went 1 1/3-innings with one strikeout, no walks, two hits, and two unearned runs, while Palmer pitched the final 1 2/3-innings with one strikeout, two hits, one walk, and no runs.

“Seven runs with two outs, that’s just ball,” said Troy coach Lyle Wesneski. “We make a play we’re out of that inning, but it is what it is. Hitting is contagious, they’re a good hitting team, and they’re locked in right now. You make mistakes, you give them extra outs, they’re going to make you pay, and they did.”

Wyalusing scored all seven runs in the second with two outs, though Mapes led off the inning with a double.

He later scored on an error three batters later, followed by Petlock getting a walk. Shaffer was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Kusmierz would score on a wild pitch, then Carr drove in Petlock and Shaffer to make it 4-0.

Vanderpool kept it going with a hit, with Hugo driving in Carr to make it 5-0. That set up Mapes’ 2-run single for the 7-0 lead.

The Rams got another run in the fourth as Vanderpool hit a 1-out single, then later scored to make it 8-0.

The Trojans got one back in the fourth, also with two outs, as Allen singled, and later scored on a Frye hit.

The Rams got two more in the sixth as Carr led off with an error, followed by Hugo getting hit by a pitch. A Mapes single drove in Carr, followed by House bringing in Hugo with a sacrifice fly.

Troy scored once in the sixth as Reed hit a 1-out double then was plated by Allen’s single.

In the seventh Gilliland drew a 1-out walk, then scored on Reed’s 2-out double for the 10-3 final.

Troy (8-3) will host NP-Mansfield for a double-header next Tuesday while Wyalusing (7-3) hosts Lewisburg Saturday.
